Hi there all, this is my 1st post so sorry if I break any rules or anything.
I'll start by telling you that I'm new to this game. My nephew has recently started getting into this so I thought I'd do the same so we could do it together. I decided I would start myself a tyranid army based on the fact that the carnifex model is just so damn sexy!!
So I started by buying myself the tyranid battleforce, this seemed like a decent place to start. I also bought 2 more carnifex's lol. I dont have to use them, just couldn't resist buying them lol.
The point I would like advice on though is how to expand from here and how do I want to play? I've set my carnifex's up as 2x Scything talons and 1 has the large cannon and scything claws.
Do I want lots and lots of cheap models? If so which ones? Or do I want less models that have lots of upgrades.
When I have my models how do I want to play? What tactics are best?
MY nephew is marines so I'll mostly be playing against them.
Thanks in advance for any replies and any advice, sorry if my wall of text made your eyes bleed lol.
First, welcome to the hive. The nids are a great army that can be individualized to fit the players likes.
Normally you would get lots of advice on how to biuld your nids. But, as of right now we are due for a new codex in January so we are a little bit unsure exactly what is going to be the best mix of weapons and units.
As a whole, in the new 5E rules as the nids stand today, a swarm army with lots of little bugs has suffered in competetive environments so most people have moved away from them. With all that said, you and your nephews are just learning the game so just have fun and put on the table whatever looks cool to you. If you have lots of gaunts then play lots of gaunts. If your nephew beats the tar out of you, good as that will make him want to play more.
As you learn the game, you will also learn tactics to go with your units. For now, just get used to the rules and wait for the new dex before going too far into specializing your bugs.
One word of advice on building your fex, use magnets if possible so that you can change weapon loads as the rules change or so that you can try different set-ups.
Have fun, enjoy spending time with your nephew, and welcome to the nids.
Welcome to Librarium Online 25 Below, and welcome to the Tyranid Hive.
Technically this thread should go in the general Tyranids forum, which is for help with rules, ideas, and general bug questions. Tyranid Army lists is for actual army list write ups. But don't worry! *Lashes thread with Flesh hooks and whips it into the Tyranid Forum*
Tyranids are a swarm army, more units is greater than better units. According to GW's announcement, the 5ed tyranid codex is going to return to their hordy roots. Gaunts, genestealers, etc are best fielded this way. Warriors and Tyrants you can spoil a bit. Carnifex are up to you. (personally I like my fexes to be upgraded our their ears.
Anyway. Best of luck!
