Hi there, I'm new to 40k and trying to make a horde-type ork list. What I'm having trouble with is balancing out the boyz and the nobz. (Nobz are more expensive than I originally thought) So my question is, if I take a squad a lootas with a Big Mek anyway, what do you think is a good balance between nob squads and boyz squads (assuming I am taking trukks for important units).
In my lists, Nobz usually take up around 500 points (including their battlewagon ride,) and it seems worth it to me. I regularly find them cutting their way through enemy lines killing everything in the way. Then I spend the rest of my points on boyz and things to support those boyz as they slogg towards the breach the nobz make in my opponents line.
Do you believe in the day? Do you? Believe in the day!
So only one unit of Nobz is really necessary?
Nobs need to get stuck in, unlike Boyz they don't have have the sheer numbers or firepower to accomplish much footslogging. It's gotta be Trukks, Bikes, or a Battlewagon. Trukks are flimsy, BW and Bikes are expensive. You can rarely afford more than 2 units unless you keep them bare bones or they make up your entire list.
I wouldn't recommend 1 or 2 Trukks either, that's just an obvious target and way too easy to bring down.
I wouldn't really take Nobs either unless they were made scoring by a Warboss. They are killy, but they end up really pricey and I'd rather have more Lootas, wagons, buggies, koptaz, or just boyz.

Thanks a ton, you guys.
I also recently started an ork army, and was having similar problems, but then I discovered Lootas. Although they are a little pricey, they have a 48" range which makes them handy when playing smaller skirmishes, as they can (at least in my experience) knock out enemy units while the Boyz and the Nobz get a wee bit closer in, making them more effective. My Nobz trukk was knocked out immediately when I used it, although I'm working on ways to make it more useful. Using a boss to take Nobz as a troop choice definitely helped me, even though it meant I had to put most of my Nobz into one big squad, rather than splitting them as I'd hoped! I had about a 2:1 ration of Boyz to Nobz, although my Boyz mostly ended up as cannon fodder (damn Dark Angel Terminators!).
Let me know if thats any help, I'm still building my army so don't know how much use I am giving advice as yet...
I reject your reality and substitute my own.
Ya, that helps a ton.
I played with lootas a bit over Vassal, and i found that they helped to crack open chimeras and rhinos before the ork line actually hit, which let me break through that faster and get to the artillery in the back.
Personally from my experience, Lootas are one of the best units available to the Orks. Their huge range makes them ideal for long range attacks while your boyz get close.
Ideally, take a couple of smaller squads of lootas (8-9 per squad), and leave them far to the back of your army, outside of 36" range of the enemy (this leaves them out of range of anything too dangerous, while still being in range).
They can act as a long range bombardment, taking out lighter enemy armour and thinning the ranks for your boyz to get in close. One large squad (13-14) works well too, they will almost certainly hurt or kill the target, but in my opinion, two squads works better as you can fire at two targets.
Also, don't bother taking a mek with the lootas, it's essentially pointless, another loota is more killy. Another point is, when you keep the lootas at the back (assuming you use lootas), keep them in cover if possible, otherwise they might start dying.
My advice would be to not bother with nobz, and take big gangs of shoota boyz. A footslogging Ork list is stronger at the moment. Mech based works well, but footsloggers are slightly stronger. A good list isn't everything though, so it's really up to you. Mech Orks are still very good.
