I have been playing 40k for a couple years now but the only army I have not played against is Dark Eldar. I don;t know why...I just have yet to meet a dark Eldar player...I might have the chance to pick up a DE army on the cheap...I would have to strip all of the paint and give it my own go, but what I am really after is what is it that that DE does? I have heard the Dark Eldar can be really nasty, mostly because no one expects to play against them. That very well could be true, but I would love to hear from those of you who lurk the Dark Eldar forums.
Well, the nastiness in DE, in my opinion, lies in their abilities to:
1. Make a really hard punch. DE are able to field a lot of high-str low-ap weapons. Out basic transports come equipped with dark lances. Almost every squad is able to take 1 or two blasters. "Oh, that was your landraider? A pity".
2. "Overload" you opponent's anti-tank. In 1000 pts I field 7 vehicles.
3. Mostly goes to 1, but still. Our ravagers are able to take 3 disintegrators. Disintegrators are 1 ap 2 small blast or 3 ap 3 shots. "There were termies in that landraider? Well, you can start mourning."
4. Speed. All our vehicles are fast skimmers. Move 6 and shoot 3 dark lances? Yes. Move 12, shoot 1 ap2 blast and 6 ap3 shots? Yes. Move 24 in case of something? Yes, please.
5. CC. Our HQ are deadly CC specialists. Our wyches are too. "Hey, my dracon and a squad of wyches just killed your 500-pts squad of nob bikers with a warboss". And we can get to CC real quickly thanks to our speed.
Well, that's what springs to my mind first. I think there's something else that I missed.

Really, darling, you must not squirm so. It spoils the overall effect.
and they're fast and powerful too
Great post Silver, sums it up nicely
Dark Eldar: 13-wins/ 0-draws / 3-loss
Imperial Fists SM: 4/1/4 1500 Annan 190th IG: 9/1/2 - retired
Chaos Daemons: 3/0/2 (stupid Null-zone)
I rather liked Kelter Skelter's one.
But seriously, we are all about outflanking and 'overloading' any unit, not just Tanks.
We can present more targets than the opponent can shoot down easily without being a horde army.
We can field combat troops that are probably the best in the game when on the attack.
We have the Talos, fire magnet extrordinaire and toughness well beyond what DE really should have.
We have 2 heavy weapons per squad.
We have transports for every one.
But we don't have armour so we don't have staying power, especially against shooting.
So get into hand to hand as soon as possible with your Wyches and stand off and fire with your Ravagers.
It's all about 'aspects' if you know the Eldar at all.
In a controversy the instant we feel anger we have already ceased striving for the truth, and have begun striving for ourselves.
Two of the few concerns that I have are that most of the skimmers are open-topped. AKA things that move fast and die easy. I am sure you can take a fair number of them but in the current metta game I have been seeing sooooo many high strenght low AP weapons being used. It almost seems that most people I play with expect a mobile list (Space Marines in rhinos) and they have all of tool to deal with it.
The other is that I am wondering if you can still get the models from GW? If by some crazy compulsion they decide to retool their molds for DE and not update Space Marines...that would put building an army on hold as you would either have to wait or pan handle on sites like Ebay.
At this time I play CSM and Sisters...both use their fair share of rhinos and both feel a little too similar to their play style. Are Dark Eldars tactics that disimilar to MEQ style of play given the number of transports i have seem being played?
We're faster, hit harder, and have roughly a tenth of the staying power. Sorry to sound like a broken record.
Point by point, I don't think there are many armies more efficient than a Dark Eldar one. We have cheap everything, from heavy weapons to troops to transports to gunships, all of which are fast, have high I, and usually BS4/WS4. I've seen a 1500pt Dark Eldar army bend a 2000pt new IG army over its knee and beat it raw. It's all about finesse and target priority, and punishes the general (or archon, if you will) much more harshly for mistakes than any other list.
There are two primary ways I've seen Dark Eldar play. The first is a stand-off game in the middle of the board relying on raiders/ravagers with nightshields, warriors, haemonculi, lots of Dark Lances, and templates (some of you will recognize where this idea came from). That was how I played my last two games (one a 2 v 1 with Me vs. Tau and Eldar. Victory. The other was against Tau, and it was a tie). The other way is to load out for a CC rush, and beat the enemies face in up close and personal with wyches, incubi, or whatever else suits your fancy. That's how I played my first several games, ending with a 4 win 4 loss record (played against CSM, SM, Eldar, and IG). I'm not trying to brag (my record would not come close to justifying it), just giving you an idea of two ways to play and (in my case), how they've turned out.
You can still direct order the models from GW, but the stores as a whole don't stock them anymore. Perqs od having an 11 year old codex.
Speaking of which, if you do get it, make sure that you get the codex with the white '2nd edition' badge on the front.
the best part about the DE vehicles being able to be downed by bolters is that you don't have to worry about high strength low AP weapons. they're not any more scary than bolters.
the point of raiders is to not let them get shot not cry about how weak they are. it doesn't matter how strong or weak somthing is if you make sure it never gets shot at.
One of things that really made start liking the idea of running Dark Eldar is some of the kick-ass unit choices like Wyches and the Jet Bikes (Are they any good? They seem cool.) One thing that I allways look at is an armies standard troop choice and the DE Warriors seem a little...Meh. With fifth edition being so objective bassed you really can not phone it in when it comes to bringing troops to the table. They don't seem to have any staying power so I am guessing that Dark Eldar like Tau try to take objectives late in the game.
If Warriors are not to your liking (They are useful for Heavy/Special weapons spam) and you prefer Wyches, you could always field a Wych Cult (Some FOC changes including making Wyches Troops).
Nightshields will protect your raiders quite a bit against short ranged weapons like Meltaguns, Bolters aren't that scary either, they will only get one shot (a shot who can only glance) or so against Nightshields, if they don't move, but then you would have moved in their range and like Mech Eldar, Dark Eldar are all about speed...
It is a fast and hard hitting fragile army, the fragility punish bad decisions while the speed and punch reward good ones.
Just so you know tho, quite a few things (in wargear and special rules) don't work anymore and some units are a bit overpriced due to the Codex' age...
Not to mention the minis. But hey, with some kind of luck they will get anew 'dex somewhen this decade...
