Welcome to Librarium Online!
i am been browsing abit through the dark eldar lists lately and noticed a lack of webway portals in lists? what's wrong with them and why are they overlooked? personally i think they are great, but i have never used them. or have i just seen not enough lists?
Why hello antique-n. Webway portal lists have lost popularity with the dynamics of 5th edition. It is harder to keep the webwey carriers alive with the new TLOS rules. Also, with the new rules for reserves needing a portal to keep the units from harm is no longer needed as badly.
You cannot move and drop a portal, which makes the portal unit an easy target. This becomes even more of an issue with each unit you place in "portal reserve," because the portal unit becomes lonelier and lonelier on the board.
Consider that our greatest strength as an army is the ability to go where we want. If you use that speed to move into position for your portal, you now have to wait until shooting phase of the next turn to use it. Your portal unit does not have a chance to move away from the portal, and the units in the portal do not have a chance to come out until the turn after that. So it is an exceedingly slow process versus using a Raider & Fleet to get close enough for a charge on turn 1 or 2 while being mobile.
There is another problem, which is that the portal doesn't really help slow units very much. If you put a Talos in a portal and manage to drop that portal closer to the enemy, those enemy units will now have plenty of time to back away from the portal and avoid the Talos when it emerges. So anything that is best coming out of the WWP is already going to have the speed it needs to be effective without it.
