whats up orkses?
I'm a beginning Eldar player, and I don't have much experience with the game at all. I have about 1000 points worth of units grand total, and bring everything I own to the table every time I play.
Due to my escapades starting to paint and play with my Eldar I caught my brother's interest, and he plans to start purchasing orks around the holiday season. He of course is asking me for my advice, and I don't have much of anything to tell him... due to never having examined the orky codex, etc.
I told him to make his first purchase Assault on Black Reach, then try to trade his SMs for moar boyz at a bitz day at a games workshop, then work up from there. I've heard that is the best way and cheapest way to get started with orks.
My biggest worry is I have heard that sluggas without a transport are vastly inferior to shoota boyz, and AoBR boyz are all sluggas- and we of course have no spare bitz for conversions.
In any event I was hoping some orkses who actually know how to play orks, could give me some advice on how to advise my brother (convoluted I know)
One further request would be to emphasize advice to compliment my space elves. I think due to the effectiveness of my guns against orks, it would be best if we played togeather more than against eachother, and having a good 2v2 team would be fun in its own right.
To give an idea of the list the Orks would want to compliment, I run a Doom Seer, 10 Dire Avengers w/ exarch in a Serpent, 10 Guardians, and 2 Warwalkers (all heavy weapons being shuriken cannons) at 500 points.
Thanks for all the help in advance, I'm excited that my brother is interested in playing, but I'm not really sure what to advise him on so I greatly appreciate input from real ork players.
He's off to a good start. AoBR is a great buy and generally Sluggas want to be mounted while Shootas perform better on the ground.
How much is he able/willing to spend on things? You can always sacrifice some strength in favor of a more affordable army, walking Sluggas can be used to good effect with the right complementary tools (Grot screen, supporting firepower, Ghazgkhull, speedier first strike units, etc).

AoBR is always the way to go. First I'd find out does he like vehicles, or does that giant green tide appeal to him? That's the best question to ask yourself when starting Orks because those are the only two builds really.
If he likes vehicles, Sluggas are fine and he can start buying some Trukks and Wagons. If he likes tide, just ebay or hit up a bits site. Bolters, Lasguns, really anything can be a Shoota. Strap it on the back or clip off the Slugga and put it there. I'd advise Shoota Boyz in any circumstance if he can grab those bits, don't be shy about asking people either, many people have useless extra guns.
Start with the basics that all armies use like Powerklaw Nobz, Lootas, those kind of things. Once he gets a feel for what type of build he's into than buy those more specialty items like Bikes or Big Meks. More Boyz is never bad either, in any army.

eBay or privat seller are the cheapest place to get stuff.
I find both the sluggas and shootaboys to be effective both mounted in battlewagon and slogging. I prefere 20 shootaboys in a Battlewagon, =D. for trukks however I always go with slugga boys.
As a general rule, sluggaboys need to get to the close combat as fast as possible. If the slugga unit walks, have them running in the shooting phase to get faster to the fight. Vehicles should try to max their movement.
With shootaboys I walk 6" and shoot with everything, or if they are far away, walk+run first turn, then walk+shoot the next. In vehicle the same principle apply. drive 6" and shoot with everything.
I find armies with a mix of both works best. I have 2x20 shootaboys + a coupple of sluggaboys riding in trukks. Works great! I can be both offensive and defensive if needed.
Lootas are good in any point games. Put them in cover and let those bullets fly.
I like both nobs and mega armoured nobs (manz). I usually use them in trukks or battlewagons. Burnas are a bit hard to use, can be devestating, but is fragile. bikes is OK, buggies OK.... for the most part, the whole codex is good. Kanz are better than Dreads, boyz before toys, flash gits are generally not good... there is soo many options and uses for all the units, the best advice is to get your brother to read forums like this, or The Waaagh or DakkaDakka. There are several tacticas and summaries for the whole codex laying around on these forums.
little time, cant find the URLs now, sorry.. must go
thanks for the advice guys
I talked to him and he is interested in doing green tide, which might be slightly more expensive.
I'm thinking that doing a black reach bitz trade for more boyz + a bucket o green army men (cutting off their rifles and giving them to boyz) may make a pretty solid base for his army. Its too bad they bumped up the price for AoBR... when I started it was only 40$... makes me wish I wanted to play orks or sm haha
at anyrate the rest of the bucket o green men may make a cool start for an imperial guard army (would just need to buy bases + tanks + commanders from GW), so I really can't see any reason not to go with this plan.
In any event, I may try my hand at scratch building a few kanz over thanksgiving... they don't seem THAT complicated, eheh...
Just out of curiostity how would an AoBR army with converted shootaz work on its own? also how many points would a list like this be around?
Warboss + nobz
2x20 shoota boyz
6x Rokkit Coptaz
3 Rokkit kanz
seems like it might be a bit low on boyz, but it would only cost around 80 dollars...which is a helluva lot less than I have spent on my elves so far haha.
Nobs bare bones 375
squad of 20 boys + nob well eq 165 + 165
For 1240 pts
I'd use buggies instead of kans personally as two squads of three is going to had much better rokkit rates and drop a kopta so his feilding one squad of 5. But the Kans may just be easier for you to make from scratch than a buggie!
Green tides are great, and in my opinion, do not be afraid to go with SLUGGA BOYZ on foot (if thats what you want), most will argue that shootas are more effective but both are great and work well, whatever you can get and suits your orky fancy. I'd go with 30 strong units on foot led by a nob (with powerklaw, bosspole). Any other units in the ork codex are OK, some better than others, but they'll all work well (except flash gitz which are downright horrible!). If he has any specific questions about units, please post!
