Welcome to Librarium Online!
I really sholdent be here i play the Imperial Guard, and was just wondering, what are sone stratagies in fighting the Tyranid. (never played one before but will be soon) and can the IG even fight the swarm.
thanks in advance
Simple, do whatever you can to stay out of close combat or your dead LOL
My Imperial Guard army has never once lost to Tyranids (I can't say that about my White Scars or Necrons). The reason is that the two armies are absolutely unbalanced VS each other.
Nids have to take time to get across the table and the whole time they are getting there, the IG are pounding them with intense fire from many different sources. Shoot the fastest ones first and then work your way down to the big uglies that are crawling towards you and you shouldn't have too much problem.
BTW, this is where your heavy weapons will SHINE like Gleaminex. Put as many autocannons and heavy bolters into this army as you can possibly fit and watch pretty much everything but their TMC's die in droves.
Yes but will this work on a 4x4 board when we start about 2 feet apart
Armies typically start 2 feet apart, so a 4x4 board doesn't really change how much time it will take him to get to you, but it SHOULD change army sizes.
I wouldn't play more than 1500 points on a 4x4 table, because your army will just be packed too tightly and when the Nids get there, it will be a slaughter. In fact, I think that somewhere around 1200 points is optimal.
Also, a table that small shouldn't have too much terrain or it becomes overbalanced towards CC armies.
hmmm be very carefull when playing nids, they aint a walk over when you guard, despite what people think..
infact, guard are easily my fave army to fight against, i just seem to beat them all the time  watch out for lictors, (3 turning up on the first turn and hitting your front lines) Winged hivetyrants and hormies will usually be in CC by turn two, so the guard usually find it hard to take down fast TMC's also the new infiltrate rules make stealers a realistic threat to guard.
H0urg1ass was correct the armies are very unbalanced, and if both players know what there doin, then sadly it can often be a case on who gets first turn, also be aware of Tyranids playing seeding swarms, or night fighting rules.
Generally never ever play a recon mission against nids, or any mission that means you have to move Forward closer to the nids, cause once that Swarm hits your lines relativly intact..then its mumchy time and the guard tend to die in droves
Army of the heavens, my army waits in hell
To battle on the earth, for all the souls who fell
Watch out for genestealers, they may be small but they turn tanks into scrap piles. Kill the hive tyrant before it reaches your army, it will cut through the guardsmen like butter. Don't worry too much about the carnifex, because he is slow, but if you have a lot of lascannons by all means kill it.
You call those cheap implants boobs?
They aren't boobs, they're lies!
Thanks guys for all the info, but anymore people hew come here feel free to add your 2 cents, need all help possible.
The lemun russ with 3 heavy bolters will take out a brood (squad) of guants a turn, or decimate them beyond repair.
and as somone suggested, worry about what is fastest first. (i.e winged creatures, and hormagaunts)
<insert witty remark here>
i tied my only nid game on a 3x3 cityfight board. there are two strategies. mass them w/ grenade launchers and lasguns, or many many vehicles. i fielded 4 chimeras, a leman russ, a basilisk and 5 sentinals. i also decked out schaeffer and his last chancers with grenade launchers. autocannons and heavy bolters are good. infiltrating ratlings helps a bunch b/c they can either attack the ratlings in cc, taking up on turn and distracting them from their objective, or they can ignor them and eventually fail their 2+ saves (TMCs). just to let you guys know, in that battle, by the third turn i had dropped 2 broods of of stealers, and 2 broods of gaunts, leaving one (walking) tyrant, 3 warriors a fex, and a lictor. hurray for massed grenade launchers!!
