    Are necrons THAT good?

I went to a 1k point store tournament a while back, about 20 people there, and imo a very weird thing happened.

As people arrived, their names and armys were written on a bit of paper, and they were given an opponent and told to get started (only 4 table and it was a knockout). By the time my name was down all the table weres in use, so I had to wait for one of those games to finish. Naturally I peered at the bit of paper to see who I may be up against, as it turns out, lots of other people did (hardly surprising).

    Here's where it gets weird.

As I was chatting to the other people waiting I started to hear murmerings around the room along the lines of "oh shit, theres a necron army here". No mention at all of the giant horde of Nids (the eventual winner), the daemons who were playing at the time and who tabled their first opponent loosing I think one monster and 1 small unit. It was all mumerings about what they could possibly do about the crons. Tbh it did put an evil smile on my face, and once I realised it was happening I may have helped it along a bit.

Are Necrons really that feared, or do you think it was just that people were afraid of what they didn't know. As the day progressed a couple of the people I played really had no clue about the necron abilitys... I've never seen someones face change so fast when what he thought were harmless strength four weapons blew up his landraider.

Blimey, turned into a bit of a rabble, but are necrons overpowered, or is it just they were getting worked up for no reason.

Necrons in 4th edition were great against mech lists. So people like guard and such we could glance and DESTROY in 4th.

However in 5th edition we suck eggs! With glancing being nerfed we're left with nearly no decent anti tank solutions and the monolith might not be easy to kill, but it's hardly a HUGE threat! It's a S9 AP3 pie plate...guard get S10 AP1 plates (so do many other armies). Smart people ignore the monolith, go for phase out, and get necrons into CC they die horribly now. We need an updated codex bad because it was released JUST before 4th edition (but written with 4th edition in mind).

Necrons are NOT overpowered at all since 5th edition came out. They just fear them being cheesy years ago, and there's very few necron players out there so they also don't keep up on their rules much.

Yeah I agree with Dark. Necrons are not overpowered, and they haven't been in years. Even before 5ed came out. They were strong in 4ed, but not unbeatable by any means.

I feel it really is mostly that people have no idea how to make Necrons die and stay dead if they don't play them every so often, so they panic.

That or none of those folks had played since 3rd edition?

My friend plays necrons. While a good player can be a huge nuisence to other armies and in some ways hard to deal with it is usually the inexperienced that have the most trouble and aprehension when facing them.

At the 1k point range, the necrons face the huge disadvantage of having so very few units to place out. As was mentioned they lack in the heavy choices. The monolith is great but expensive and really lacks the ability to knock out armor effectively. Heavy destroyers can do it but are expensive for what they do and relatively easy to take out.

Against close combat armies they tend to fair badly due to lack of good cc choices. Just my opinion though. Hopefully the new codex will give some diversity and love to the Necrons.

I play Tau and up to last week was never able to defeat my friends necrons. This was mostly due to bad rolling against the monoliths.

Depends who you play, knowing the necron rules goes a long way to beating them.

Some of the old codex armies don't have practical ways of dealing with liths but the newer forces have numerous S9-10 weapons and low AP pieplates. And as others have said 1k is a little tight for Crons.

Perhaps there was a really great necron player who used to frequent the store and built up a reputation, some people can be very self defeatist.

The fear of Necrons stems from newbies not coping with the simple threat and veterans stubbornly holding onto the idea that Necrons are still good

Necrons are by no means overpowered.

Are they strong in terms of their baseline stats? Of course but it isn't everything in a game.

And I agree, its the inexperienced and those who don't know the necron rules that get worked up about it rather than keeping a cool head and planning for it.

I also like to think that I'm an example of what A.T. is talking about. Not necessarily at the store but within my circle of 10 or so fellow gamers, they do fear me alright .

    Lucky...

I need to break my losing streak...think I'm on, 5 or 6 atm. (not counting a demo game I did against horde nids.)

Yeah, I am lucky when all things are considered.

My opponents aren't terribly bright when it comes to dealing with necrons. They either try to outshoot necrons or try to baby their CC specialists when they should really be charging them.

But I think it comes down more to my strategy and a bit of favour from the dice gods.

There was one guy at the tourny who hadn't played since 3rd (me).

So it's just an old reputation which won't die (much like the necrons)... fair enough.
