Welcome to Librarium Online!
Good Afternoon, sorry for making this a seperate thread, but I thought it warranted its own.
Much like the title implies, when the new codex releases I will officially be starting a Tyranid Army. I don't like fielding unpainted models, though, so I am starting my purchases now and have already assembled a few items. My hope is to have enough painted on the release date to field a fairly intelligent list right away.
My problem is two-fold. First, I am not very well versed in Tyranids. There are only two major players at my FLGS and neither is there enough for me to play them often enough. Thus, I don't know what makes a good list now other than just net-listing from the respective sub-forum. The second problem stems from the first. Much like I don't know what makes a good list now, I don't know how to compare that to the rumors I am reading about both from GW and on popular web-forums.
Basically, I am asking what I can buy now that will not change much after the codex release. Specifically, something I can completely model and paint. I am well versed in the use of magnets and plan to use them when appropriate.
What I have thus far:
2 Carnifexes (still in box)
2 Genestealer boxes, unopened
2 Zoanthropes (one was free, yay)
1 Biovore (again, this one was free. I love prize giveaways.)
2 Tyrant Guards
So far it seems the blister-packed creatures don't have a lot of modeling options, so they were the first I modeled. One night of Monday Night Football and they are all done. Green-stuff should be all dry now.
Next I am going to tackle the Genestealers. It seems that Scything Talons and Extended Carapaces are the most popular bio-morphs, so I plan on including them, especially with the rumors of rending being more effective.
The Carnifexes I will most likely spend a lot of time with magnetizing. Is there anything I shouldn't worry about magnetizing and can just leave in the bits box? This is probably the most confusing area for me. I can read the current codex and the rumors thread, but I am having trouble putting head to tail for both. I guess this is how my students feel when they open their physics book for the first time, lol.
I will probably buy at least one more Broodlord this week and paint them at the same time because the rumors are leaning towards them not being unique and rather being an upgrade to a unit of Genestealers. Is this a bad call? Also, will a squad of 8 Genestealers with a Broodlord be enough, or should I buy another box in order to flesh out the squads a little bit. I'm just worried about losing too many models on their journey to see some action.
Since I plan on having a well-rounded army that can eventually field multiple list styles up to 1500 points and restricted lists at 2500-3000, is there anything I can buy now that is a sure bet to still be popular with the new codex? Should I buy all the current Gaunt boxes that I can now, or wait till the different species are separated with the new release?
A Hive Tyrant should also be coming soon, but I'm going to wait a bit before I do anything with it. Hopefully the rumors about codex release push-backs aren't true and the new codex is in the inevitable black box that will be coming later this month. The Hive Tyrant will probably be the last model I finish before codex release.
In 5th edition, troops win games based on taking objectives. If you lack troops, then you will be hurting. Since hormagaunts are excellent fodder, you can't go wrong with buying the gaunts boxes you find around and building/painting the hormies. As for the gun-gaunts, I am waiting on mine to see the changes (if any) as there are too many to both magneting.
As for the carnifexes, you are only required to model weapons the model uses. Extra things like glands, sacs, miasma, bioplasma, extra all fit into the same category as grenads and I myself to not plan on modelling any of it (at least as magnetic options).

Battleforces contents look like they will remain the same. This is good in the sense that the box comes with common units frequently used in the game. Fodder will be cheaper so you can't go wrong on extra gaunts + hormies. Battleforce has always been the cheapest upgrade solution for Tyranids. The box will also scale well and max out your FOC slots.
Personally I'm holding out till January. for specialized units like gargoyles and raveners. If the unit looks solid on paper AND has plastic models count me in. Until then... I wait.
Re: Magnetizing. Sounds like you have the right of it. The bare minimum for wisiwyg are weapons options. Most people just care about weapons being accurately shown on a model. The rest is mostly up to you. The fex is nice in that you can magnetize pretty much everything and the bits are easy to swap. My magnet points are head, top carapace, arms and tail. Being able to change loadouts is fun and it really looks like the fex will have some solid options for the next codex.
As for listing... speculation abounds on that topic. I expect previous list standards to change. Rumors indicate flexible play styles so we're all going to scamble to make new lists very soon.
Bottom line is pretty much everything that came in the previous battleforce is going to be safe. Even then, I'm magnetizing all my arm sockets except basic gaunts just to be sure. Warriors for instance look like they will have many roles to come.
Leave the Twin-Linked Deathspitters at the bit box. I don't know if they're going to aprove and if so, how they are going to aprove but I think it'll stay more viable to put them on warriors rather then Carni's. I'd stay away from the Fleshborers and the Spinefists as well (don't recall if the Carni's actually get to buy them as I never look at them but I just wanted to mention them). I guess this is how my students feel when they open their physics book for the first time, lol.I usually field my Broodlord with a retinue of 7 so if you're fielding 8 you'll probably be fine for now.I will probably buy at least one more Broodlord this week and paint them at the same time because the rumors are leaning towards them not being unique and rather being an upgrade to a unit of Genestealers. Is this a bad call? Also, will a squad of 8 Genestealers with a Broodlord be enough, or should I buy another box in order to flesh out the squads a little bit. I'm just worried about losing too many models on their journey to see some action.
I'd wait with the second Broodlord. Because there aren't a lot of rumours about him and it'd be a waste to just put him in a shelf until you play multiple foc's or apocalypse...
'Thou shalt not refer to the Adeptus Soritas as "Bolter Bitches" nor shalt thou go anywhere near our sisters during the time of the "Red Rage," lest thou wishes to be the first human to enter orbit without the aid of a shuttle.'
Gaunts and Carnifexes, both are getting buffed and you can't go wrong. May want to wait on the Gaunts because they're boxing them better soon but...meh.

BETTER BOXING? And here i've bunkered up as many as possible, being scared of the new boxes...
Please throw some light on that statement!
99120106017 Tyranid Battleforce 46 Fig Box 5-Dec-09 $105.00
99060106064 Tyranid Spore Mines 9 Fig Blister 16 Jan-10 $16.50
60030106003 Codex: Tyranids (English)96pp 16-Jan-10 $25.00
99120106016 Tyranid Ravener Brood 3 Fig Box 16-Jan-10 $44.50
99120106018 Tyranid Gargoyle Brood 10 Fig Box 16-Jan-10 $29.00
99120106019 Tyranid Trygon / Mawloc 1 Fig Box 16-Jan-10 $49.50
99110106063 Tyranid Pyrovore 1 Fig Box 16-Jan-10 $33.00
99120106021 Tyranid Termagant Brood 12 Fig Box 12-Dec-09 $24.75
99120106020 Tyranid Hormagaunt Brood 12 Fig Box 12-Dec-09 $24.75
9906010606201 Tyranid Venomthrope 1 Fig Blister 16-Jan-10 $20.00
9906010606101 Tyranid Hive Guard 1 Fig Blister 16-Jan-10 $20.00
So they might be a little cheaper overall, but the Battleforce apparently no longer has a 'fex in it (you get more gaunts and they include rippers in the description instead.) The new Battleforce has:
3 Warriors (35$)
8 Genestealers (35$)
16 Hormagaunt (24.75*1.333 =33$)
16 Termagaunts (24.75*1.333 =33$)
3 ripper bases.
For a total of 136 dollars (+ the rippers) worth of product for 105. Not as good a deal without the Carnifex, imo, but still a deal.
In any case, the printing error is all but confirmed and the release looks like it will be the 16th of January hard confirmed. The black box most likely will NOT have a codex in it
In any case, thank you for the advice. I think I will wait on the Broodlord (at least paint him last in case I want to get one or two more) and work on the other figures I have. I'll model this round of stealers like I originally planed with the expectation that I will have at least 16 more from Battleforce purchases.
Im hoping the new 'nid codex makes them slower and only 1 wound to carnifex and Warriors. I also am hoping for a rule that makes them flee from the mighty Eldar (okay, calling Eldar mighty is pushing it a bit...)
