Right, I've only been playing DE for about 3 Months now, and I've built up a 2k point army in total. I like them and I'm really looking forward to the update but there's one thing that's been bugging me...
Some, no, ALL the Dark Eldar Players I know don't WANT a new Codex, because apparently the current 2/3Ed Codex we have is the best out there! Apparently there are plenty of loopholes that make DE amazing and they're severely under-pointed.
Sorry but, am I stupid or is this completely untrue? I can't find any loopholes in the Codex, nor can I really see anything that's "Under-pointed". Maybe the Ravager is pretty damn good for it's points but still... Can anyone help me with this?
You look at the codex one way where you have 5 point blasters/10 point lances on BS4 models (which leads to the infamous "sniper" squad) and ravagers being absurdly cost effective or you go the other route which leads to some....interesting RaW applications.
My favourite of the latter is the horrorfex pinning fearless models.
Oh and the codex is 3rd ed, it is just the 2nd printing (yay, we get vehicle upgrades!).
After four years or more of playing DE (however sparsely I ever get the chance to play 40k), I've gotten a little better at them but there was never anything that made me go "Wow! This is an awesome army!" For every way I found out how to improve, I either found out the relevant rule was outdated and revamped, or everyone else got something twice as good. That or my uncannily bad dice-rolling got in the way of any tactic I could devise.
Try to picture a knife-fighter dueling with a tank. Sure, the knife-fighter could win, but only if he gets the drop on the tank, chucks a blade through the viewing port, blinds the driver, and causes him to send the vehicle careening over a conviniently close cliff. It CAN happen, and the knife-fighter can practice to improve his odds and try to choose a good locale, but that doesn't change the fact that he's still fighting a frackin tank and he's one slip-up or streak of bad luck away from becoming a smear on the ground.
DE are pretty much the knife-fighter in this situation. If it works, it ends up being a spectacular cascade of events that leads to the utter domination of the enemy. Of course, the odds of such ever happening are so slim and so dependent on good starting conditions that you have a pretty good idea of whether this will happen by the end of turn 1, but 90% of the time it won't.
Maybe there's some prodigy out there, one of those people who's been getting top spots in tournies with DE every year, but I haven't personally heard sight or sign from one of those people themselves. If you can find one of these mythical players to give you advice, let me know he exists. Heck, in all my time playing WH40k, I've seen firsthand evidence of only one other existing DE player (discounting pages and forums online, and the fact that I've seen more than one DE codex in stores.).
I have won both tournaments I've entered with my DE, in fact I haven't lost a game in 5th ed. with my DE.

Personally, I would welcome a new codex, as would most ofthe DE players I know. Of course, I dont know them personally, as I am the sole DE player at my LGS, but online and whatnot. I think changes to some of the under utilized units, like scourge, hellions, and mandrakes, would be great. Of course, I will miss the two special and 2 heavy weapons in a 10 man Warrior Squad.
Also, I think it is an overstatement to sugget that DE players exploit "loopholes" in the codex. Any examples for these loopholes?
(WH40K) Dark Eldar - (12,000pts) Sisters of Battle - (5000pts) Dark Angels -(3500pts) (WHFB) Dark Elves - (10,000pts) Beastmen - (5000pts) Empire - (3000pts) Wood Elves - (1500pts)
First off, the teacher in me says, there is no such thing as a stupid question!
Secondly, since the game became about taking objectives DE have become a wonderful army. They always are attacking, can mount all their Troop choices in cheap Fast Moving, Skimmers, and most players have no developed counter tactics against a properly (Raiding) played DE army!
With the current metagame and how 5th edition works, DE are one of the best armies out there. However, there are two major issues:
- Lacking in variety of COMPETITIVE units.
- Entire model range blows chunks.
The both would be solved with a new codex update (since new models almost always come with a new edition of a codex). We're fine as we are now but I'd like more options for competitive lists besides just raider rush.
Well one can always convert models. See it as a challenge more than a short coming!
One need not be a miniature Michelangelo to get nice conversion works done.
Things I have done to Dark Eldar in the past to make them nicer have included removing the fiddly blades off their body armour, turned the blade around on the splinter rifle (giving a more boarding axe look than bayonet) using Wood Elf hooded heads instead of the cone head helmets and adding Kroot skin bags/pouches and the raw meat bits from the same models give the DE a very "Reaver" like look. Simple stuff, but looks great and far closer to how they are described in the background and I imagine them.
