With the new spore drop pod, I'm sure many of us are wondering what we're going to use to deep-strike our fexes/troops. Last weekend I proxied some canned ham. Worked well enough but lacks the overall "nid" feel. (insert ham jokes here)
Walking the mall yesterday I can into the local Waldenbooks having a store-closing sale. Average of 50% off. Stuck in the very back I found something that can work very well as nid spore pods! A "Mega Blok Dragon Egg". Cost me a whole 4-dollars. The egg itself stands taller than a fex and looks like something a tyranid would actually ride down to the planet in. Turns out there's a number of the mega blok dragon egg lines so you can pick some that fits your liking. A little bit of moddiing/painting and it will make an excellent drop pod!
Haha, nice find. Though I'd rather see if I can build them myself, it'll make for a nice project.
Nice idea if I fail though
'Thou shalt not refer to the Adeptus Soritas as "Bolter Bitches" nor shalt thou go anywhere near our sisters during the time of the "Red Rage," lest thou wishes to be the first human to enter orbit without the aid of a shuttle.'
That's not bad at all. Like you said, a good base to green stuff some carapace, attach tentacles, Nid weapons and horns.
Scale looks ok if its as big as a Fex like you say. Thanks for the info, worth a look just to see the possibilities. Can't argue the price compared to say, an official drop pod.
They also look somewhat like Mycetic Spores, with the large exit maw and everything. Sadly the don't sell those locally.

OOOOO, that's a good idea. I have a few of those eggs. Though I was thinking of making mine like clams or muscles from outer-space. They would be sealed as they hurtle down to a planet. When they land they split open like muscles do when they are cooked and the bugs come running out.
Why not use Forgeworld Brood nests? Say they come from under the ground instead of straight from the hive ships. Fits with the fluff still. And still technically cheaper than a Space Marine Drop Pod... 11 GBP instead of 18 GBP for a Drop Pod.
Here was a link from the modeling forum of a do it yourself spore pod. The basic shape looks nice you will just need to add some texture and buggyness
