Welcome to Librarium Online!
ok, simply I've got £75 left from Xmas, need the new codex, and so a battle force looks like a good idea, i believe that i may be able to squidge 30 quid out of my parents (its what their for). after looking through the 'dex i have decided that i must have a mawlock to eat my friends Tau so that's why i want the 30 quid. the reason i post here is, Is the battle force any good for starting an army?? warriors are apparently very good, as are genestealers, but i have a feeling the gaunts will fall foul to tau fire-power. any other units people would recommend for the future?? i will most likely get some gargoyles but i dont know enough about how units play to be able to make a decent list for playing TAU and CHAOS MARINES.
Gaunts have a special purpose in life. That purpose is to get shot to death so the other units don't have to. The battleforce would be a fine way to start, gives you plenty of troops to form the rest of your army off of. Also you can convert termigaunts into hormagaunts, or hormagaunts into termigaunts. Either put spinefists/devourers on the hormagaunts, or genestealer scything talons on the termigaunts.
One thing you should decide is if you want to be assault oriented, or shooting oriented. Trying to stick in the middle of those two can cause problems, focusing on one or the other will make an army rather powerful. Don't ignore one for the other though, shooting and assault are still both important to have.
well, seen as he has a very shooty based army, i think a close combat oriented army would be just fine, having looked through the codex briefly, i belive there is a HQ with 4 bone swords??? and i like the idea of the gaunt spawning moster, along with the assault 20 cannon thing??
i would suggest lictors for precission strikes and place them inbetween units, because they come in from reserve just like marbo. grab two hive tyrants with hive commander skill making your lictors come on +2 second turn. and give them winged so they don't miss the fight too! and then grab mawlocs and deepstrike them right next to the squads or right ontop ( within 6 inches ) and watch the army die. i would also grab genestealers so he cannot literally target anything first turn. and grab two spore spores from the genestealers and give them to the hive tyrants if you can't get the wings. and deep strike them right near the lictors so you have 5 MC popping up first turn, three S6 AP2 large blasts popping up. two squads of genestealers and two pods and two or three lictors. also to save points, if you can't find the tyranid pods, outflank your hive tyrants . just because you can.
so what your saying is that i need to be picking up some lictors and give them winged, a hive tyrant or 2, a few more genstealer squads and im sorted??
2x hive tyrant winged , if not winged place them with the mycetic spores that the genestealers buy. then grab 3 lictors and use them as homing beacons for all your deep striking units. and three mawlocs. some geenstealers and your done. you shouls have around 100-150 points to spare if your genestealer squads are just 7 guys each and your hive tyrants are only winged with hive commander and your mawlocs are naked.
a. how many points is this
b.would it be better to take 2 mawlocs and 1 trygon??
also, what sort of tactics could i use against tau??? from what i can gather the battleforce comes with:

Go out and buy the codex, it will get you far more info far faster than asking questions here will.
Without a massive amount of additional biomorphs that would run you between 600 and 650 points total. You would also need an HQ to add to it. So really you could be looking at a 750-800 point list with about $200 US (Ain't 40K great?)
With either trygon or mawlock, I would suggest putting your stealers in reserves, have them pop out of your fancy new ground-whole and book to the nearest patch of victims. Your Gaunts and Warriors may need to reserve, or be put in spore pods, otherwise I foresee them all getting shot to ribbons first thing out the door.
as others have said your guants are cheap, not horribly effective troops, but they are cheap, at least in game, buying them is another matter, it can cost you about 30 quid to put together a squad of 30. they are very good at being screens, that is they run in front of whatever unit you have behind them and give that unit a 4+ cover save. your opponent can not really afford to ignore them, but can not really afford to deal with them and let whatever they are screening get into close combat.
with a limited budget i might not think the trygon/mawloc is the best use for a ~750 point army. you need an hq unit,a warrior to make into an alpha, or a hive tyrant, or tervigon, which currently has no model unless you convert, and for full usefulness requires you buy another 30quid of termagaunts, or the parasite whcich does not have a model yet either and for best use should probably be surronded by gargoyles.
i am not sure what will be more effective, but i would go with warrior or hive tyrant. maybe buy a warrior, ask your friends if it is okay to proxy as a HT, if you like the hive tyrant you can easily add the warrior to your warrior squad when you buy a hive tyrant.
get the core of your army working, if you are playing with friends proxy things before buying them and finding out they do not work for you. nothing worse than buying something you could not really afford and not being able to play it
then if you can afford it add more genestealers or zoanthropes.
