What are everyone's thoughts on the whole slew of unique characters that the tyranids suddenly have access to(and re availability for the death leaper/old one eye)
my own personal thoughts
(unique hive tyrant) is pretty awesome i think for only being a bit more expensive than a regular tyrant with two pychic abilities each turn an invul in close combat, synapse range of 18, bonuses for reserves and outflanking over all very good deal for the points i think
Old One Eye:
(unique carnifex) im not sure about this one basically a glorified carnifex for a bunch of extra point that pay for what a slightly better regen ability, a potential 16 attacks on the charge...oh wait thats why he costs more.
Doom of Malan'tai:
(unique zoanthrope) a pretty awsome character able to be used as a near suicide model with his ability to gain wounds
(unique lictor) with a host of special rules that make it awsome his ability to leave the table and reappear somewhere else for sneak attacks is going to make using him a lot of fun.
Parasite of Mortrex:
its ability to spawn ripper swarms in proliferate numbers is going to be very bad for any footsloggers and make enemies think twice about outflanking.
(i know not unique but still) these i have already used and i can attest to their abilities to be the masters of surprise assault and with their alter form ability you can give them better toughness/streangth/more attacks, each assault phase (enemy included)
so these are what i think about them what does everyone else think? (ive only used old one eye, the swarmlord, and the ymgarl genestealers so i cant say that im the expert on any of this characters)

used ol one eye once, and he got blasted apart first turn
i've got a carnifex that is best represented by him, though i've been hesitating giving him crushing claws. for now i think he'll just have to stay on the shelf.
The death leaper is amazing he does wonders in close combat and can help out anywhere on the map. Maybe even making a crucial move to reappear on an enemy controlled objective in turn six.
WH 40k Armies (W/L/D):
Tyranid: 2250 Points of Awesome (5/4/1)
Necrons: 1000 Points (4/0/1)
sorry about your loss on old one eye but i just played a new game against marines and for one reason or another he did not move his land raider when old one eye approached and when he charged he got 16 strength 10 auto hits he got all bug eyed at the large # of attacks and demanded to see my codex for shenanigans cause it worked out like this one eye charges rolled a five for crushing claws which gave him 8 attacks and because of his berserk rampage instantly doubled that. well he spent the rest of the game trying to kill it(and failed). i want to try out the doom of malantai next but i worry about him getting instant deathed by a lucky las cannon shot or similar high strength weapon
and i agree about the death leaper he may cost as much as 2 regular lictors but he's clearly worth it.
Swarmlord: If I ever take a Hive Tyrant i'll probably just take this guy. The fact he has 4 swords just makes him one of the coolest looking characters in 40k lol. Still, will probably run a list around him soon.
Old One Eye: If regeneration worked more like FnP in that taken with saves, then i'd be taking him. But the fact its not till your turn gives him just way too much chance to get his face blown off my lascannon/railgun/plasma spam
Doom of Malan'tai: When he decimates 4 squads on the turn he arrives from a Trygon hole then well...yeah. Extremely frail but should be trippling his points before dying.
Death Leaper: Don't really see the point in Lictors at all. If they could attack when revealed then i'd take them without a doubt. But the fact your opponant gets a free shot at them just makes me see how worthless they are. Still, will probably run with Death Leaper and a few Lictors when I try a Pod list.
Parasite of Mortrex: Had a few games with him. Very hit and miss. Some games the board ends up covered in rippers, others you don't even see one of the little guys. Just need to cross your fingers for some rending and that your opponant rolls high.
Ymgarl Genestealers: Love the idea of these, although really wish they still had infiltrate in addition to hibernate.

I used the Swarmlord in a tournament today. Had him surrounded with 3 Guard. he took out a total of 200 points in all three games. Yes....only 200 points. He is compete crap. Also had Old One Eye and Doom in the list.
Old One Eye is pretty much useless. As soon as anybody hears 'regeneration' they just don't bother shooting it until they can kill it in a turn. And since MC's don't get 'Area cover' and he has no invul save, he dies pretty easy.
the Doom of Malan'tai however, ROCKS. I used him in a Mycetic Spore. He died all three games, but never without doing some impressive amount of damage, and the resources your opponent has to put into him to kill him means less resources aimed at everything else... making him worth it just for that.
The Deathleaper is probably not worth his points, but he does sound like lots of fun. I would like to try him.
Mind you that was a fun game with my friend fielding 30 honor guards all with nade launchers and Calgar in 2000 points But my Swarmlord squad took a lot of shots and did not suffer a single wound the whole game.
Haven't had a chance to try any of them out yet, but been thinking about the Doom of Malan'tai and really, I can't see why he's so cheap. If used correctly I reckon he could be insanely destructive. Just thinking about charging some enemy squads with a few gaunt broods, deep striking the DoM't nearby and then leeching off the units already in combat partially to help out the gaunts and partially to build up the DoM't's strength/wounds, after which I could then Cataclysm any prime targets or, depending on what's going on in the combats and what army I'm against, charging into the combat with the DoM't itself. Considering it's WS, Initiative and Attack values are pretty good and it'd be hitting at S9-10 it would be inflicting some rather painful hits.
DoM is so cheap because it does have some glaring weaknesses:
-T4 means that most armies have a ton of things that could pop it
-Lack of independent character status means there is no tucking him away in a unit for protection
Those two reasons alone more than cover the price I think. I use it as a Kamikaze unit. Don't really think it is made for foot slogging at all.
