Welcome to Librarium Online!
Some one needs to help me rap my head around why some one would ever think that if you through 50 pts on an under priced model that it is now suddenly correctly priced. I see that that current Carnifex should be 20pts less then it is now. 2 Scything Talons, Extra BS, -3 Leader ship and loss of Eternal Warrior.
Lets compare to other Monstrous Creatures in other Codexes.
Eldar, the Avatar is weaker but better armored and more Skilled and gives every one around him a Special Rule. Not to mention the built in Melta gun. He is 5 pts less then the current Carnifex. The Wraithlord is considerably less like 65pts less but needs to have weapons percioused for it. It may not have as much of a bit in Close Combat but that Super hight tough ness and Strenth is nothering to scoff at. Both the Eldar choises seem alittle more for your money but not much.
Chaos, The Demon Prince can have wings and a Psychic Power for the same price as the Current Carnifex which makes him far more scary in Close Combat. Their Greater Demon is also 60pts cheaper and while lower in strenght can apear any where in combat and instantly be effective, even if you do lose a model for the effort.
All I see is an over correction on the part of GW to get players to have to buy new models. Any one that says that current one is correctly priced you need to defend your statments because I'm calling Bull.
Army's used: Space Wolves, Tomb Kings, High Elves, Tyranids, Tau and Eldar.
I'm not gonna say that the Carnifex is correctly priced, but the advantages of taking broods makes them better? maybe? and that the Carnifex has more weapons options than the Avatar? Ehhhh, thats all I got :/
I'll agree they seem to be a handful of points over what you really get these days. Maybe 20 or so points, as are a few of their upgrades (bioplasma comes to mind). An extra point of toughness on them or an extra base wound would have been greatly appreciated, T6 with 3+ save is not really appealing for that cost. At the same time I'm not paying any more points for my fexes, but losing a 1T/Sv/W/I/WS.
Also, spore pods. Win.
That is true, A screamer-killer in a pod is pretty brutal I hear.
Sadly, this is what I think happened to the carnifex.
Games Workshop made a lot of money selling carnifexes during V4 due to their awesome customization options and the new model. However, everybody loves the trygon. Enter the chance to sell a trygon model that has the rules that everyone would love to see for a CC carnifex. Want to make sure that people buy the new trygon? Make the carnifex less attractive compared to the trygon. Make sure people can field two or three trygons in a list (or mawlocs).
Did you notice that hive guard are almost too good to pass up? New model, nobody has any. Did you notice that gargoyles are suddenly great? New models, people do not usually use a lot of them. Did you notice that spinegaunts became inferior to their "standard" config? Also, tyranid warriors are suddenly much better. I had a lot of them due to my army in V4, but I was unusual.
Wait until the V6 codex, which will probably make carnifexes awesome again, and trygons less awesome. Oh, and other shuffling. I'm not terribly bitter, but this is one of the ways that GW keeps us buying new stuff.
Tyranids: Hive Fleet Kohr-Ah
Carnifexes remain awesome. They are also the cheapest MC in the codex. Just take it basic with a pair of scything talons and you have something that will tear apart anything with ease. A distinction no other unit in the 'nid codex can claim.
Did you notice that tossing such a 'fex in a spore costs exactly the same as a trygon? Coincidence? I think not. You gotta figure the 'fex gets, at a minimum, cover from the spore when you drop it out (deploy correctly!). Trygons/mawlocs are nearly impossible to give cover to. So the 'fex is actually better protected of the three. And if you're slogging it, you have more points to spend elsewhere in the list. (How about 2x catalyst on your tervigons with 10 pts yet to spare?) You can easily afford a pair of basic 'fexes in a single slot. 320 pts for 8 T6 wounds and a3+ save? If that isn't awesome, I don't know what is.
The fact that you can mount guns on them for a decent price only makes them that much more useful.
Mawlocs and trygons are awesome. But they are 1-trick ponies. Not every 'nid list will benefit from them. Every list can find a use for a carnifex of one stripe or another.
Hive Tyrants are definitely "stronger" than carnifexes for most purposes. (All save slagging armour, particularly land raiders.) But they are also WAY more expensive. Carnies are cheaper and you get just about the same thing. And that keeps your HQ free for cheaper options that are still nasty. (Can anybody say "Prime"?)
All this hate on the carnifex is misplaced. The 'nid codex is no longer about individual models. It's about the entire army working in concert. Carnies have a place in most lists, no matter what it looks like. The same can't be said for most of the other units in the codex, no matter how good they are. (And they are mostly very good indeed.)
ninjabackhand: point and click, again, really? even after i give you an military term "shock tactic" you still call it point and click.

The only real MC that makes the canrifex look overcosted that isn't in the tyranid codex is the talos - it may lack some strength and wounds but it is over 50% cheaper and against all but the really tough oppnents will be dealing very similar amounts of damage.
