Working on an army at the moment (My Army List: http://www.librarium-online.com/foru...ck-wanted.html ) and I have doubts about two units in the army...
First is my mob of 17 boyz in a battlewagon with Ghazghkull and a KFF mek to ard boyz for games of 1750pts for 68pts, but are they worth the upgrade?
Second is my unit of 5 nob bikers (1 Dok, 2 Power Klaws (1 with bosspole), 1 Banner and Big Choppa) now Ghazghkull and the mek are very important so I can't give them a warboss on a bike to lead them.
Normally I would be worried about relying on their leadership of 7 with the re-roll but for two turns they'll be fearless thanks to Ghazghkull's waaagh, however I want to know if this is still too risky for a 363pt unit?
I would rather go with a larger unit since 25% of your unit is 1.25 models. Losing two nobz is a Ld check and if you're going against an army that's shooty you might end up losing that 3rd nob to a failed FNP since he only had one wound left. That's most of your squad gone and very little punch left for 363 pts.
I'm more curious about the 'ard boys work in lists. I've been curious as to what people think of them. I've just hardly ever seen anyone put them in lists. I guess I would think that the 4+ save just gets broken so often that maybe it isn't worth taking? I personally am fighting my roommate who using basilisks. (dang their 2 AP... *grumble) So I guess maybe I just don't get much use. What does everyone else think?
When I take ard boyz I take a unit of 11 with a nob then stick them in a trukk. With the improved armor and the correct upgrades with the nob the unit has served me very well.
Ard boyz can work well, but only in a transport (otherwise it's no better a cover save, which they're likely to get). In a transport, they prove effective at surviving long, protracted battles against opponents that don't ignore their armor save, something normal trukkboyz don't do quite as well. On the other hand, the upgrade is relatively expensive, and I think a second battlewagon filled with boyz might be a better choice, overall.
I usually don't attach a warboss to nob bikers, as they're powerful enough without him, but that unit needs combi-weapons and 1-2 more models in it. I also don't like big choppas. You're better off just leaving them with a slugga/choppa, or paying extra for the powerklaw.

I think that in the case of ard boyz you could make the argument that for 3pts a model (1 pt less than ard boy upgrade) you can get a unit of grots....who will provide a 4 up cover save. And shoot....and take objectives. To me my Ard Boyz never seem to get to even take enough of those saves to help or make the pts worth it.
