So I recently stumbled upon a Maugan Ra Model, my first and only Phoenix Lord in my growing Eldar list. Well he is cool, so I took a closer look at his effectiveness and started thinking...how do I use him in my list?
Lets see....4 Shotspossible, BS 7, Str 6, Pinning, Rending, 36", possible re-roll to wound/no cover. He's a little beast when it comes to sniping. So it got me thinking...would he be effective joining a unit of Pathfinders?
For example, him and a unit of 8-10 Pathfinders sitting IN COVER on an objective. He'd have the same range, more shots, add more of a punch, they'd pretty much normally be going after similar targets, and most importantly he may offer some sort of deterrant to getting ran off an objective. 4 Str 6 WS7 I7 Power Weapon Attacks.
On Average that squad would be dishing out 5-6 AP1 wounds per turn on something with T6 or higher.
My question is...would the pathfinders still haves their +2 cover save...ie if a lascannon came flying into that squad, could I just put it off on a pathfinder with a 2/3+ cover save? How else would you guys suggest using the Harvester of Souls?
The most common use for Maugan Ra I've seen seems to be putting him in a squad of Harlequins with Shadowseer to give them more power weapon attacks and to help shift savable wounds that the Harlequins get hit with onto him. He also combos well with the Death Jester if you decide to add it to the Harlequin squad.
Interesting idea, if a rather expensive choice, but it makes the pathfinders alot more valuable.
The problem I have is that its like 450 points to do, which is of argueable value
Was the first PL I ever bought and imo the coolest
Only Phoenix Lord I own, and the only model I've ever bought solely to paint. I hope he will be more worthy of my HQ slots when our new dex eventually rolls around, as having him leading my Altansar force would be much cooler than Yriel.
That depends on your enemy. Do you face IG or other non fearless enemy? split in as many pinning shooting units as you can. Force him to make more tests. He works well in foot councils. You face fearless enemies, maximize killing power.
Hight elf and Craftworld Eldar army project pics heavy: linky
putting him in with a squad of dark reapers also works pretty well since that squad is now fearless and he makes for great assault deterrent against out-flankers/deep strikers. i know that he has less range than the basic darkreaper but my reaper exarch always has the tempest launcher witch has the same range as maugan ra, they make for quiet a tag team on anything that strays within range.
A fearless character does not confer fearless to a squad he joins.
Ummm, take a look at the codex
A pheonix lord joining a squad of his own aspect warriors makes them fearless.
Guess I overlooked that in the codex. I've never run a Phoenix Lord in a battle and normally fearless is lost when the IC joins a squad. I stand corrected.
Well its such a rare occurance that a PL would be used, let alone joined to their own squads that I can understand
I mean for their cost you really want them to be providing some major benefits to their squads, but in alot of cases the role their squad fills isn't really aided by a PL becaues the PL either fits other roles better, or doesn't quite suit the actual squad he has been put in.
Hopefully next edition we see some major overhauls of the PL's to make them more like SM characters, where chosing one defines your army a little more clearly, more akin to the craftworld days!
