I have a Hive Tyrant but I'm not sure what second weapon to give it.
I already want it to have a stranglethorn cannon but what the other weapon will be is the problem.
The first is the lashwhip and bonesword. They have the following advantages as far as I can see.
1 They cost less points (come with Hive Tyrant's cost) and the Hive Tyrant is already costing loads of points which the devourer will increase. About 250 without a twinlinked devourer.
2 They will make it flexible so it can fight in assault as well as shoot. Beat up characters for example. Not get creamed by psycho enemy characters.
3 Looks better, more fun to paint than the stubby devourers.
The twinliked devourers.
1 The devourer can be used with the cannon to inflict as slightly nastier morale test along with the stranglethorn's pinning test. A psychological warfare thing.
2 It will probably kill more stuff not just make it easier to kill a select few enemies by wrapping them up with the lashwhip so they can be gutted.
3 The devourer is easy to use.
That's all I can think of. My Hive Tyrant will also get toxin sacs, thorax swarm (probably dessicator larvae), Hive commander or old adversary.
This was going to be a poll but for reasons I don't know it is not. Please just tell me what you think.

I would go your lash whip and bonesword, you have lots of shooting there and between firing a psychic power and your stranglethorn cannon you can't fire anything else thorax swarm or devourer. so ahving 4 weapons when only 2 can shoot is a bit over the top especially if your paying all the points for them.

That's handy. I may do that. Though I have other Hive Tyrants with boneswords and lashwhips.
I'm still not sure but I see your point. Thanks alot, reppy for you.
so this guy is foot slogging it? i reckon you keep him with the BS +LW too. and then give him a thorax swarm
I would say to go with the devourer for now. At least until the FAQ comes out and tells us that we can use the BS + LW together and gain the benefits of each.
I think youve got apoint with Devourers LD mod and a piining weapon... And the psychic weapons arent long ranged, so its not as if youd need to limit yourself concerning shooting... Id drop the Thorax swarm, though. I never get close enough to use templates... Or at least Im in cc when I get that far
Add ancient adersary for the rerolls, and he should do fine. The I 1 is only noticable when charging into cover, and hes fire suport, so even if he DOES charge, dont charge into cover.
^^Did that make sense?
Anyway, hope this helps!

Right now, I'm currently using 1 set of TL-devourers along with BS+LW. It doesn't make sense to go with scything talons unless you have 2 pairs, and lash whips are awesome in assault. Thanks to S6 devourers, now they can actually do something to light vehicles. But the most important thing is...what's the role of your HT? Do you want shooty, cc or mixed? Use it to tie in with the rest of your army for greater synergy. You can't really go wrong with either, so see what else is in your army. If your tyrant is going to be a major cc-threat, give it lash whip + bone sword. However, if you already have an assault-heavy nid list, maybe your tyrant could have a shooty role and help bring down light vehicles.
Lastly, magnetize them so that you can switch them out depending on what type of army you want to use.

Hey thanks for the responses, they have helped alot. I think I'll be going with the bonesword and lashwhip. I checked out the points cost and the devourers blew it sky-high. The presence of the lashwhip also reduces the need for an adrenal gland which keeps points down. I'm actually try to be a little points-concious with this Hive Tyrant, I often for get about that. The stranglethorn cannon and thorax swarm will be handy for attack along with a shooty psychic power. Leech essence or psychic scream depending on if I need any wounds or I want people to die.
NecroNid I think we can use both the bonesword and lashwhip at the same time, I don't see how the rules would prevent it. I can see whay people may think the thorax swarm is a bad idea but I want it get in close which makes the bonesword and lashwhip more useful. I also converted it to have the thorax swarm. jy2 I You are right the scything talons have less use when not in pairs or for cheapness. I can see why people magnetize but I never can. I convert stuff to much to do that, thanks for the help though. Reppy for helpfulness.
Pg. 42 under Close Combat Weapons says that if a character has two special weapons he must choose one or the other to use in CC, he does not gain the benefit of both. I think this will be FAQ'ed as bonesword and lashwhip have always worked together but for now it looks like its one or the other.NecroNid I think we can use both the bonesword and lashwhip at the same time, I don't see how the rules would prevent it.
