I haven't seen many people take raveners and you may have underestimated them like me. Because the main reason why i hadn't taken them is because i didn't think that they were worth their points cost, especially when they didn't have fleet. Well, not until someone pointed out that beasts have fleet, which i missed, and after play testing with them i quite like them.
5x Scything talons
5x Rending claws
Have these guys supported by a tervigon that can cast onslaught and you can unleash 20 S3 shots that are twin-linked, while moving, fleeting and then charging 19-24 inches in total. With 25 attacks that re-roll 1s, are S4 I5 and rend. Having the paroxysm power from the hive tyrant helps too. This squad is very good at 200 points as it is able to take on squads of 30 orks, any hordes and terminators, whether they have storm shields or not, but if your facing storm shield guys then i wouldn't bank on them to wipe them out make sure they are supported by a squad of hormaguants or something similar.
They each have 3 wounds, but can be instant killed from S8 weapons but i usually have a tervigon, a tyranofex, a venomthrope if they can see it, warriors and a hive tyrant for them to be worried about so the chances of them being instant killed aren't that high.
I am currently using these guys in 1500 points.
What do you think?
Adding a ranged weapon does not remove a set of scything talos, therefore they re-roll all misses, other than that, They do look like a good support unit, but thats just about it.
but I love the models!!!
I love the raveners too. Unfortunatly they still have the same issues as the previous codex. I often find that a squad of warriors serve better when dedicated to ranged or melee. While the warriors lack fleet, they gain synapse, point-capture and don't have the limitations to assault that beasts have. I always want to field them but end up taking them out and replacing them with a warrior squad.
I like them.. I just have too many other things that I like MOAR currently.. I'll get some soon(ish) as I like the models and they will go NICELY in larger games
My primary issue with ravenors is just that I don't know where to fit them in my lists. I might pick up a couple because I love high-speed assaulters like that but it's just something that might have to wait a while. They really do have one of the best models in the codex and I love their flavor and approach (especially after using the Ravenor Alpha in DoW2 ).
For me theyre far too fragile. Bolters destroy them and any sort of S8 large blast will decimate all of them at once.
The other problem is that hormaguants seem to do the same job for less and with more bodys. Yes you dont get the shots, but its more attacks, easyer cover and a troops choice. theyre also less dependant on working with other units, eg an onslaught is really needed, so theyre quite happy on their own.
just personally anyway.
Your friendly neighbourhood gargantuan creature
For me they end up losing out to Warriors and Hormies because they are not Troop Choices. Also(though it may be a small thing) they cannot use the Trygon hole because they are not infantry. This seems totally unfluffy but whatever. I like the models and they are fairly effective, but as stated in other replies, they usually end up getting taken out for other things.
i think that bringing them up with the trygon/mawloc would be viabe though, they occupy a FA slot ( i think) and that in itself makes them valuable, also theyre still beasts and so have maximum 24" assualt and put a few guns in there and your sorted.
warriors do the job better but because they are synapse are targeted by lots of enemy units and heavy weaponary and raveners can block line of sight if you bring them up in front of the enemy (like in battle of macragge)+ they look cool
The main problem though, is the actual money cost, they're £28, i can get a warrior box, and for £2 more, a zoanthrope, hive guard or lictor.
