Welcome to Librarium Online!
A While ago I made a Tau battlesuit conversion and since I was looking for a small 1500pt elite army I thought I could go with a Farsight list with a fully tooled up bodyguard.
However I got no end of comments about it being a stupid idea so I given up on it. But I don’t want such a nice conversion to go to waste…
So is it possible to create a ‘mostly’ Battlesuit tau army that can be effective?
Cause if I can’t find a tau list that will suit them I’m actually considering converting Tau terminator army and using them as Deathwing!?
A 'mostly' battlesuit army is absolutely viable. Most people tend to full units of xv8's in the elites section, and normally two as COmmanders as well.
Add to that a unit of XV88's and you are looking at 11-15 XV8's (with room to add even more in both the HQ section and heavy support sections).
The problem comes when talking about an "all" battlesuit army. Because there are a few key elements that really make the Tau machine work.
Pathfinders: Invaluable, absolutely nessecary to take out cover saves, up BS etc.
Kroot: Absolutley nessecary in my book. The only unit that can deal some CC damage and stop those fast assault units for at least a turn or two.
Hammerheads: These will take away from the battlesuit count, but they really are an awesome tank. The ability to use either the submunition
or the solid shot makes them such a versatile tool.
Hope that helps some
I don't care what you say. I found a lightsaber in my garage and that makes me a Jedi
Oh yeah! It a very effective list. It's all about the tactics and layouts you use.

Thanks to Forge World you can also field XV9s in the Fast Attack slots as well. They are expensive, short-ranged (max 24") and mostly focused on anti-infantry (both light and heavy), although a couple of their upgrade weapons can be turned to anti-tank if needed.
If you take them you do lose the ability to take Pathfinders and their upgrade weapons aren't available yet.
Rather extremely viable list.
Just plan out what your suits will do, and be sure to make use of cover.
