A tyrant with hive comander and a cannon is at least 215pts, maybe close to or exceeding 300 depending on upgrades, guards etc
A Warrior Prime with some nice upgrades is about 100
Assuming I have about 6 units coming in from reserve with a tyrant (about what I will have in a 1500 pt game if I am all reserving) with the points difference I can get a squad of stealers and a prime instead
In the above scenario the tryant gets about 4 units in turn 2, the prime gets about the same (3.5). Basically the prime worksout with only bslightly fewer units on the table early, and ends up with one more. These numbers can vary (put a lictor in, kill the tyrant etc), but overall I am not convinced a tyrant is worth it. The tyrant makes 1 unit outflank as well, but the prime buff a unit of warrior nicely himself. The tyrant is maybe a bit better, but the warrior is an IC so is probably harder to mkill and can take warrior insta-kill las shots to protect his warriors.
So what am I missing, as the reserve lists quoted always seem to include 1 or even 2 Commander tyrants
The fact youve only got 6 units coming in from reserve is where your veiw is being slightly distorted
In a lot of lists that seek to utilize hive commander, theres in excess of 9 or 10 units coming in from reserve, and they use hive commander to aviod coming in peicemeal which would be very bad.
It also ensures that almost all the reserved units come in for turn 3, the chance for a 1-2 then a 1 is 1/12 if ive done my maths right, so theres little annoyance of having key units coming in late.
So yes it is certaibly worth it, but only if your playing a list that could benefit a lot from it, your is probably too small to make full use.
Your friendly neighbourhood gargantuan creature
I played a Tyrant with Hive Commander and dual TL Devourers at 1000pts, and I only had 3 units deep striking. The upgrade was absolutely worth it though, everything came down (or up, in the case of the Trygon) in turn 2. Though that was probably more due to luck than anything else. Still, I rolled a 5 and two 3s, so if I hadn't given him the upgrade then only the Carnifex would've come down.
