10 naked Genestealers
3 Shrikes w/Boneswords & Toxin Sacs
So I've got a couple games at the 750 point level for our local Escalation league, and I'm debating on what to take. It's either going to be 10 naked Genestealers, or 3 Shrikes w/Boneswords and Scything Talons. I already have 2 units of 10 Genestealers, a Zoanthrope, and either a Winged Tyrant for fun, or a Tyranid Prime w/Hive Guard for better balance.
I had fun with the Hive Tyrant at 750 against Space Wolves, but it still died in the end, and I learnt a Heavy Venom Cannon is a waste on him, as it didn't really do what I thought it was going to for me. We have a lot of Marnie players, some Orks and a couple Guard
Between the two, I'd consider the genestealers more, as you might want some extra troops around in case of objectives. True Genestealers aren't the best objective holders, however their lack of durability in this edition makes it a bit more important. Shrikes aren't really any more durable, and if you ask me, only marginally more killy.
I support the "prime + HGs" over Tyrant though, especially for this points level.
Sure tyrant is expensive at this point level however not much is capable of killing him with such a small amount of points. Just run him with 2X Scything Talons. Don't waste points on allowing him to shoot. Use paroxysm or leech essence in the shooting phase.
WH 40k Armies (W/L/D):
Tyranid: 2250 Points of Awesome (5/4/1)
Necrons: 1000 Points (4/0/1)
Well, if anyone is curious I ended up taking the Genstealers, with the Prime & Hive Guard. I played Mech Guard, and only managed to kill Sly Marbo. He just had way too much shooting, and due to the scenario & Dawn of War set-up, I got eaten alive.
What scenario was it? And didn't you manage to flank your stealers near his lines? Next time add another zoanthrope and maybe put them into sporepods!
- Just love that maki! -
We played the Headhunter scenario from the 'Ardboyz with Dawn of War deployment. I was attacker, but only being able to field 2 troops and the Prime was limiting, when he could put in 2 Troops and Command, all in Chimeras, with Sly Marbo and a Hellhound in reserve. First turn he killed 3/4 of the Termagants, over half the Genestealers and laid a wound or two on the Prime. 2nd Turn I only rolled in with my Zoanthrope and Hive Guard, who managed to shake a Chimera in the 3rd turn before dying. On the 2nd turn I lost both the Termagants and the Genestealers as well as the Prime. 3rd Turn the 2nd Stealer Squad cam i only to get roasted by the Hellhound that finished off the first squad in the previous round. They Assualt it, but it gets away unscathed not beng able to shoot next activation. Sly Marbo pops in finishes off the remaining guys as well as the final squad in the third turn, but the 3 survivors manage to kill him.
I didn't have a chance.
I think the Genestealers are the best choice in a game that size. Shrikes are very cool but they are super-pricey. I think that they are a better unit in bigger games where there are more bugs in need of control and much more points to spend. Bigger games also allow for several different ways of destroying your enemy and Shrikes can more easily be one of them.
