Welcome to Librarium Online!
I havent played my tyranids in a good long time, In fact with the new codex just released I am 2 editions behind it.
I have a-lot of older models. Most of my army is metal, Probably 80%. To give you an idea on how old most of my models are, Half my gaunts are metal.
So I am wondering if I supply a list of what currently have table ready (Most are conversions for modeling purposes and unfit for play or the list would be pages long) would anyone be able to give me a direction in which to head to bring my army up to date. I intend on purchasing some of the newer plastic models as they are too nice not to get. But I really don't want to go out and repurchase every single piece I own, Some of it has to be salvagable.
Here is what I have available. Weapon loadouts/biomorphs on most of them can be changed, As I could never decide on a paint scheme, So most of them are simply primed and easily modifiable.
3 Metal Hive Tyrants (2 old large metals, and 1 small old old old metal)
1 Metal Broodlord (made from an old lictor)
5 metal Carnifexes (3 are 2x tl dev's, 2 are very old and only came with a VC and strangler arm and the curvy scy talons)
6 plastic Warriors
12 Metal Warriors or 12 Zoanthropes (same body, different heads)
4 Metal zoanthropes
5 Lictors (3 old, and 2 REALLY old)
6 Tyrant guard
16 metal hormagaunts
32 plastic hormaguants
16 metal termigaunts
32 plastic termigaunts
1 Metal Old One Eye
1 Metal Red Terror
9 Metal Raveners
3 Metal Biovores
This is just assembled and primed, I easily have another 40lbs of unassembled bits/kits. Gw employee discount on metals at the time was 3cents on the gram, And I went a little overboard. As such I mostly use them for modeling purposes or creative basing/dioramas. However I would like to have a finished playable army as well.
I realize I am probably asking alot here, But I really do feel directionless after looking over the new codex. I have a-lot of Nids that just sit there and take up shelf space, And while I would really like to purchase some of the newer plastics I'd rather not just have them end up shelved as well due to it not being as useful as i thought. Plus money is rather tight so i just cant replace things on a whim to see if they work or not.
I'm not asking for a complete list per se, Just more of a direction on what I need to replace and or upgrade and what can be shelved or retired to to mod bin. Having not played tyranids at all in 5 or so years I am not even sure whats worth what anymore. Though I am devouring this forum currently, But it doesn't hurt to ask for advice in the meantime.
Any insight or advice anyone can offer is appreciated.

Well, most of the stuff youve got isnt that bad, imo. You could easily make up some lists with it. You might want to proxy/convert some of your tyrantguard into hiveguard, but thats just a suggestion, as youve got loads of zoanthrope which can do a similiar job... A quick question, though: You do have the codex already, dont you?
As to using your stuff:
You could proxy the small tyrant as a T prime, wouldnt do much difference with TLOS, I think...
The Broodlord would need some stealers to use it with (if you choose to use it)
The Red Terror might be usable as a Parasite of Mortrex, if you so choose, just add wings, should work out fine.
Maybe convert one Thrope into a Doom of Malantai, you should have enough
Other than that, most of the stuff is still good (well, except lictors... Maybe use a Deathleaper, hes kinda useful), with some of it getting boosted (biovores, raveners for example), other stuff getting nerfed a bit (carnifex pointcosts). You shouldnt have much trouble adapting to the new edition, modelwise. Id post a list, but a) most of the guys on here would probably write a better one, and b) I havent got my Codex right now. Still, I hope this helps you a bit!

You could put together a few serviceable walking lists with nothing but what you have. E.g.:
2 Warrior Primes (attach to Zoanthrope units)
2-3 x 3-4 Warriors
maybe another Troops option for kicks/a change of pace
up to 3x 2 Carnifexes
I would favor shooty options on most of the carnifexes and probably the warriors too, most of the time. YMMV. In any case, such a list would scale well from about 1500 pts up to 2000 pts. Footslogging armies led by Tyrants can work just as well, too.
Welcome back! You should enjoy the new 'nids codex quite a bit. There are a gazillion ways to run the army these days.
ninjabackhand: point and click, again, really? even after i give you an military term "shock tactic" you still call it point and click.

I suggest taking a look through the army list forums. Most units in the codex are very much worth taking. The old horde w/ support is viable once again. From what I've looked at the most effective basic choices are;
Warriors (for frontline combat, and objective camping)
Termagaunts (for getting shot/ tieing up units)
Tyrants (For being killy)
Zoanthropes (for anti-vehicle)
Genestealers (for being sneaky and killy)
Tervigons (For objective camping / making babies)
Hive Guard (for anti-vehicle)
Other units are still viable, building a list out of just those elements is completely unnecessary (I for one only use half of those units currently)
Finding a theme is a big step to getting places with your list-building. Consider the elements you want to be using. Do you want to run a more horde oriented list? Or would you rather have elite soldiers? Do you want your primary damage output to be ranged, or assault? Also consider what you have around to drop tanks and transports, both are still problematic for tyranids without the proper units to bash them down.
Thanks for the reply's.
Yes, I do have the new codex. Building a list 2 codex's ago was rather simple. You either took heaps of gaunts or as many mc's as you could. Looking through the new codex there are so many unique critters and there are many more options on unit types for the slots in the foc as opposed to being able to weapon beast everything into what you wanted the slots kinda left me flustered.
Now conversions, Tha'ts right up my alley and I will definetly be looking into your suggestions. I cant pass up a good conversion project.
I always preferred a shooty nid list and it looks like i have most of the options available to me with what i have available. Its always hard playing catch up after so many years of not playing, So many changes. Happy to know my second army isn't as bad off as I initially guessed.
Thank you for the input it is most appreciated.
