In my new Wings/Deepstriking 1750 point list I'm contemplating swapping out the Gargoyles and using my FA slots for a small swarm of Spore mines.
The thought of having their army disrupted and displaced 1st turn, with the 2nd turn full of incoming Mycetic Spores and various exploding mines appeals to me. Especially when I dont have much on the table to start with.
I'm worried though, as a bad scatter roll can see the entire unit wiped out, and would I get hit too if the mine goes off on an enemy and I have units too close?
Would 3 units of 10 Gargoyles be a better use of the 180 points?
On the plus side, I'm thinking the armies that would worry me on the first turn (Guard and Tau blowing the crap out of my Hive Tyrant instantly) would be the most put out by S4 AP4 large Blasts going off on thier firing lines.
I dont get much chance, at all, to playtest so any opinion or experience would be welcomed.
Deep striking is a risk we all have to take at some point and with a full reserve army you risk alot on it. I also noticed the singularity in your Hive tyrant so I'm assuming that your running only one. In a full reserve army you need everything to show up ASAP with only one tyrant and assuming you took Hive Commander you need a 3+ for each unit to arrive so unless your very lucky you could end up with 2-3 units not showing up until turn three, which is okay unless its the units you really need on turn 2. So my suggestion is 2 tyrants if you haven't got them already both with hive Command upgrade. Not sure if your running spores on your troops but you could save points here as well by outflanking them instead if you are.
At 1750 a unit of 10 gargoyles wont last very long if at all so an option for you to take would be run a single unit of 15-20 with toxin upgrades, (OMG SO GOOD + less kill points on the board), then run two units of 3 spores. Not sure how the points balance out there ill let you figure that out. But incorporating the two will give you the opportunity you need to play test both units and get comparable results at the same time.
Hope this help you
It's not a full reserve army, but yes it's quite dependant on good reserve rolls.
My other HQ choice is the Parasite atm, and I'm not sure it's worth swapping out for another Tyrant and dropping a Troops choice (to make up the points) for ~16% extra chance of getting in a reserve.
I've also built a bit of redudancy into the list to compensate for late reserves. Unless the enemy has some great ranged firepower, I dont manage to call in a single Elite and my Spore mines wander off the board without exploding I dont expect to hit too much of a wall.
Anywho, the main question is, in a nut shell,
18 Spore Mines vs 30 Gargoyles - Which is the better (more effective/reliable etc) choice in an army list where their duty is, quite simply, disrupting the enemy until the reserves come into play.
i'd say 20 gargoyles and 2x3 spore mines. the gargoyles because, lets face it, they are the cheapeast most awesome fast attack choice ever! and the mines are best used to be deployed into cover so that your opponent needs to shoot the mines to be able to use it which would leave him in the open for some rounds. in addition they are nice in dawn of war missions as your opponent isn't allowed to deploy anything 18" from ANY enemy unit (or did i overlook something)
