So I'm considering taking anywhere from 0-3 units of shrikes. I like the models, but they are expensive and only have a wimpy 5+ save. Plus, in 5th ed. we can't spread incoming wounds around anymore like we used to. So, since we can't customize them anymore... are they really worth it? Wouldn't Ravenors be better? I know they provide synapse. I was just curious of your opinions. Your advice would really help. Thanks in advance. -Jay
I think the best advice that could be given is to play test both units. Use proxys before you go out and spend the money of course, play a couple games see how they fair for you.
Personally I don't like either but shrikes do offer a cover save to flying tyrants if they are modeled appropriately. The bonus ravenors carry is that they have a thorax weapon meaning you can shoot and still posses rending claws and scything talons which most other units cant do + they are beast.
still, give them both a shot. just because someone says something works for them doesn't mean it will work for you.
Hope this helps
I love shrikes with boneswords, give them adrenal glands for a furious charge and watch them do good things to almost any other units. You have to be careful where and how you use them, take advantage of cover, or they will get shot before they get into combat. But if they are shooting at your shrikes, they are not shooting at something else
I use them with gargoyles and cover them until they get close enough to charge with boneswords. They will beat down almost anything they charge.
I'm now using my brood of 4 x 4th ed winged warriors (STs, RCs) again, with some satisfaction. Their extra wound and extra attack each are very worthwhile. They serve to provide cover for the winged HT coming up behind them, and provide a lot of extra synapse coverage for the gargoyles, hormies and raveners that make up the fast 'hammer' wing of my swarm. I do look forward to tossing some boneswords into the mix, though the presence of the WHT does make this a bit over-killy...
