i've tried to play speed freaks in the past but it had never really worked out as i have barely ever won against armies such as chaos or eldar. i'd really apreciate some advice please.
My experience is the biggest weakness is there's not enough 'wounds'...in other words, not enough models to get killed and still do stuff. It's a fun army and the more bikes you have, the more attention you can get. But you give up fearless, depending on weak morale and things go south in a hurry.
What sort of Speed Freeks? We talkin' Trukks, Bikes, or both?
At risk of hijacking this thread, I'll echo the beef about questioning the effectiveness of a Speed Freak army. I'm in the process of building my first Ork army, and I'm planning on running about 4 trukks full of the standard boyz/nob, and a hefty squadron of nob bikers for my core group. I'm still debating where to add some supporting units though. I'm thinking either Lootas, a full squad of infiltrating kommandos for instant panic, or a group of 15 burnas following up in a battlewagon....you know, clean up the carnage.
I know this is getting near an "army list" posting, but I think it addresses the original question as well. Very specifically, what have been your experiences running an army build like this?
Thanks for your input,
It's a crapshoot really. Trukks are the most fragile transport in the game (on top of doing goofy stuff like moving backwards) and the Boyz inside aren't capable of doing much damage on their own (and they run at the drop of a hat). Nob Bikers are so ridiculously expensive that your army ends up dedicated to them. For all the hype, they still get shut down like any other deathstar (mech, shooting, bait, better assault units like TH/SS termies).
Against armies that can't stop 4 Trukks and some Bikes, you'll dominate. For everything else, you'll have problems.
FWIW, I'd consider the best Speed Freeks can do is Wazdakka, Bikers, and Buggies. Lots of mobile firepower (S5 can hurt side armor), still good in HtH (PKs do all the work), and not reliant on AV10 open-topped death traps.
I think the most Important thing to have is a Big mek with a KFF in a Trukk, and hide that Trukk behing a couple of BattleWagons. That will at least keep them alive for the first turn in most cases, since they first have to PEN AV 14, then you still get a chance to avoid it with a Cover Save. It's not a guaranteed save, but it's better than nothing. Even if you don't have a BattleWagon, Big Meks with KFF give any vehicle a 4+ Cover Save, so they should improve the survivability by any of your Vehicles for hopefully a turn or two.
But yeah, Trukks are weak, and Nob Bikers aren't nearly as tough as a lot of people make them sound. People at my store still think Nob Bikers and Burnas in a BW are like the most ridiculous, Broken and Over-Powered units EVER.
I personally am not a huge fan of the 'death star' model of running things. If you do want to run a speed freaks list with some bikes though, here are some suggestions:
Run the nob bikers as a squad of 3-4, use only one klaw, a BP, and some combi-scorchas/huge choppas if you have extra points.
Run a nob warboss with a PK and bike. Keep him cheap too.
Wazzdaka, and a small squad of bikers. Keep everything fast and cheep.
And as many warbuggies as you can field. They're the best 'model blocker' in the game. Shoot them around at 12'' and block your enemies in so they can't move where they need to go with out dealing with the buggies, which are fairly expendable.
Speed freaks is alot of fun it is the main build that i play. the following are your friends.
Trucks- wile they are paper thin they are really really fast and are a great way to deliver a PK fast. Make shure you keep them cheap (Ram only)
KFF mek- This guy is mandatory if you are runing hevey on vehicals
Bikers- Great unit and vary shooty take units of 6-12 always with a nob and PK
Buggys- you cant go wrong here they are cheap and efective always use TLR
Battle wagons- wle not as fast as turcks they are way more surviable i always use a deff rolla grot riggers armor plates and redpaint and 1 big shoota.
Deff coptas- unit size of 1 or 5 if you use 1 give it TLR and buzzsaw scout across the bored shoot then assult a vehical on 1st turn. With 5 all TLR
Lootas- make great back field support for blowing up enemy armor.
boom guns make great back field support as well just give it the gun and an ard case.
A unit of 3-4 Nob bikers might be too small to really be effective. I think you're better off using 5 warbikers w/nob, powerklaw, and bosspole. It'll save you almost 100 points, and won't be that less effective.
Speed freaks is my favorite Ork army, but in order to be effecitve, you really need a KFF (to give your vehicles a 4+ obscurement save), as many warbuggies with rokkits that you can get/fit, and 1-3 battlewagons with grot riggers, a gun, and a deffrolla. With these, you can transport units of 20 boyz (shootas are my favorites), nobz, meganobz, grots (for cheap objective grabbing), or one of the various elites.
What's all this for? To distract your opponent from your units of trukkboyz, warbikes, and nob bikers (stormboyz can also work, but they can be expensive, in both real $ and points). These units are very effective for their points, but fall to shooting really easily. The secret is to use other fast units to distract and obscure your more important ones.
If you have the points, lootas, big gunz kannons, and killa kans are also great, despite not being fast, because they can take out enemy transports and give your units a lot of support fire, and distract your opponent further. I'd especially consider using some of these units if you don't have many warbuggies in your list.
"Any job worth doing, is worth doing with a powerklaw."
Hey, thank for all the input!
Yeah, I wouldn't feel comfortable ever running a handful of trukks without a KFF. I think the main premise of the army is to have several (knowingly) expendable units around that will be able to cause immediate havoc, or provide your opponent something that he (or the ever elusive she) will have to deal with. That way, it gives you time to get your boys involved and swarm them to death.
I saw a combination of a speed freak and footslogging army a while back, and I liked the idea. There was a modest biker squad that would be in the front lines so fast you wouldn't know what to do. All this was a distraction from a battle wagon full of 15 burnas/Mek & KFF and 60 footsloggers making their way across the board. I thought it worked fairly well, but like with all armies, the more you play against them, the more you're able to see ways around their tactics. And after all, isn't that kinda the name of the game?
But back on topic, from what I'm gathering is that the effective way to play speed freaks is to run a screen of units to soak up the shots while you give your trukks and boys time to get into CC. Yup, I like it!
