I am a casual warhammer player, and have tried my hand at space marines, necrons, and tau. I dont have too much fuf with either the space marines or the necrons, i am selling them in hope of starting an ork army.
Im not really sure how to go about starting one though. The mega-force and AoBR set seem to be the most bang for my buck, but after reading some of the threads on this site, i am afraid that i will buying things that i will not use.
As far as what i have read mechanized orks, or an ork biker army sound the most appealing, but im not sure where to start, i will have about 200$ to start it up once i off the other armies.
any suggestions on what to get, and how would be greatly appreciated
I'm glad you looked around a bit. That should have given you a good idea how to start an Ork army.
The mega-force is $200, which eats up your budget. I strongly advice starting with the AoBR orks and if you can pick them up in a trade then the mega-force isn't a terrible option. I also recommend that you find the money to get the Nobz boxed set. It will help you TREMENDOUSLY with the all-important Nobz.
You should be aware that the Ork boyz frame in the battleforce, mega-force, boyz box and Green Tide box have a 'free' Nob w/PK for every ten boyz! They don't always count that on the outside of the box. The AoBR set does not have this.
Based on your budget, you wouldn't have enough money for the Megaforce AND the Nobz box. If could swing the extra cash, then it would be a good way to go. You're committed to a lot of bikes though....hope you like 'em!
An alternative is the battleforce + Nobz box. That leaves enough money for Kans, a KFF Big Mek, Lootas and either more boyz, more lootas or a battlewagon.
I recommend starting with the AoBR warboss, 40+ boyz, a Nobz mob (in a trukk with the warboss), the koptas, bikes and either kans, Lootas (or both).
Ebay. Seriously, you will find fantastic deals, especially on old 'viking' style Orks. They don't look the prettiest, but you'll get the most for your buck that way. I'd also look for dirt cheap Rhinos and/or old style Ork trukks, to get you started. Both can be used as either trukks or looted vehicles.
Besides that, the best value for your $ is the Assault on Black Reach set. To get the most out of it, you need to split it with a Marine playing friend. Still, even if you don't have one, you could use the terminators into meganobz and the dread into a deff dread pretty easily. Just sell/trade away the tactical marines and the captain, and you've got yourself a great deal.
For general advice, you might want to check out this thread, that a few people, including myself, put together as a general beginner's guide to the Orks:
"Any job worth doing, is worth doing with a powerklaw."
I think that your should try to play test orks before you commit to anything. Use anything you can find and play a game against a friend and let him know what each thing counts as. This way you can find out what YOU like before you buy anything. I personally play a more mech type of list, but others play horde. Some like lootas, others dislike them. Its all personal preference. I made the mistake of buying things that i figured would be cool when I got into orks and some of that stuff if still laying around unpainted.
No matter what type of army you choose some of the staples that you will need are.
Boyz(decide if you like shoota or slugga from play testing)
Nobz(Either as a full squad or just for the PK that you will need in each boyz squad)
Big Mek w/ Kustom Force Field(One of the best HQ choices in either footslogging or mech type lists)
I think that you can get about 20 boyz from ebay for about 15 bucks.
I would also take a look at the site bartertown.com There are people that are willing to trade or just buy using paypal there. I think i recently saw someone on there selling the ork half of black reach for only 20 bucks so there are deals to be had.
hope that helped.
dude i have a thing of like 30 of the vikeing looking orks that i will mail you if they will get usedright now they just sit in a box and never get touched.
Orks are a fun army, great for casual play and converting. They do plateau early and are quite limited in terms of making a really competitive build, but still a very enjoyable army to collect and play.
Also, TRUKKS SUCK and FOOT BOYZ SUCK!

Ghaz only super Waagh!s once, and even then the foot boyz have a hard stop popping transports, leaving them vulnerable to getting roasted.
Deep Striking 30 models is...problematic, to say the least.
I gotta freakin' paint up Ghaz. Don't know why, other than he's sitting in a box over here unopened and he's cool looking.
