So I was playing a game against the new Blood Angels yesterday and I experienced an example of how good Venomthropes can be in close combat.
Malanthrope, a Venomthrope and two Warriors (Scy Tal, Tox Sacs) vs 6 Death Company, 11 Assault Marines, and Dante.
The marines got the charge and had Furious Charge so I'm thinking I'm doomed until 5 of them drop dead while charging from the spore cloud, Dante gets chewed up by the Malanthrope, and the Warriors kill off another 2. I lost one Warrior in the fight and next turn I just mopped up what was left. It was the most unexpectedly brutal fight I've seen.
Granted 5 dead in one charge from the spore cloud is rare but undoubtedly awesome! I'll never underestimate the Venomthrope again.
Tyranids: Hive Fleet Kohr-Ah
Cool, would have loved to see that go down!
I think his big mistake was leaving the venomthrope alive before he charged. Bet he won't do that again.
The Malanthrope is awesome. Too bad it's lost its feeder tendrils and it's not available in regular 40k games. While the venomthrope seems kinda cool as a defensive buff, I usually prefer offense with hive guards and zoanthropes, though I do plan to use 1 venomthrope in an apoc game coming up. I'm going to use it to give my Hierophant cover as we are playing it with the old Warp Field rules (meaning only 6++ as opposed to 3++).
