Welcome to Librarium Online!
Ok, my flatmate and I have just taken up 40K... He's using Space Marines, and though at first i was thinking Eldar or Tyranids, after mucking around with the Orks in AOBR I fell in love with playing Ork and an now building an Ork army...
Heres the deal... usually when we play it is quite close, so when we do standard missions it usually comes down to points... He has one annoying tactic which isn't a game changer usually, but still irritating...
He deep strikes an assault and basically shoots me up from a distance and keeps ahead of me... I can't outshoot him (being an Ork), and I want to engage him in combat. should i get Shock boys in my army? Maybe bikes or warbuggy? I've got copta's which can usually engage him untill another unit arritves to finish him off, but I'd rather use my copters on his tanks, dreadnaught and other hard to kill units...
At the moment I field 6 copters (3 units of 2)
3 Kill Kanz
15 nobz (5 w/cybork, eavy armour, big choppas and a pain boy in the unit)
Ork Warboss in Mega Armour w/bosspole attached to a unit of 5 nobz or 20 boys
Ghazghkull Thraka attached to a unit of nobz.
this is about 1500 points...
any help in stomping these cowardly space marines and their pansy hoomie tactics would be awesome...
may the waaaaggh! be eternal and bloody!

If you're on foot, you need to shoot, running up and praying for a turn 4 assault isn't the best way to go and it looks like you may be learning this the hard way. Shoota Boyz (easy conversion from AoBR sluggas, just cut off the choppa and add a gun), Lootas (more easy conversions, just add random big gunz), Kanz (rokkits or grotzookas), Big Gunz (kannonz), Buggies, Deff Koptaz, and Bikes are all potent at range, can be good up close, and give you the reach you just can't get footslogging. Orks are actuall quite good at shooting just through sheer weight of fire.
Alternatively, mech up. Battlewagons, and to a lesser extent Trukks, let you get those choppy boyz get stuck in faster.
I'd never run nobz on foot. They either need a trukk, battlewagon, or bikes in order to be effective. If you're going on foot, I also highly recommend Big Gunz w/kannons, and Lootas.

Thanks for the pointers guys... I try and use cover where I can when making my advance. We generally play we roll a D3 for how many 'pieces' of terrain we get to use... I tend to opt for trees or hills so i can take cover behind them in my advance.
I also said 'shock boyz' in my original post, i meant storm boys... it was late at night here in Aus when i posted that lol.
How would i deal with his assault troops later in the game? He generally drops them behind the battle line out of range of my ork weapons in turn 2 or 3 and basically keeps just out of range for me to shoot him or assault him. I'm thinking about what unit to buy next and I've decided i need to resolve this issue which will turn the balance in my favour (untill he counters of course).
I have a Deff Dred on order through ebay but that's more because i like how the model looks than anything else.
I think you are a bit thin on boyz. Figure out how to take one more unit. If you want to get snazzy, a small unit of 12 'ardboyz (inc. nob) in a trukk can tie up a unit for a turn unit the foot mobs reach it.
What do you reckon of a unit of 10 'ard boyz, with my warboss in mega armour and a truck??? Would the truck survive long enough for them the Assault Troops Deep strike in the later game?
I don't know. I don't worry about stuff getting killed - somebody's gotta die! But it's a powerful unit. One way or another, the enemy will have to deal with it.
Trukks are great, even if they get destroyed.
Cool Thanks guys... i just hope he doesn't find this forum himself and finds out what I may be planning... sounds like something a Space Marine would do.
D3 pieces of terrain? That's it?
Check the rulebook, you should have 25% of the entire table covered in terrain. That's a lot more than D3.
Trukks are crazy fragile, bringing just 1 and banking on it is a recipe for disaster. Shoot more or grab Battlewagons.
