Welcome to Librarium Online!
Well, I took a break from the Dark Kin for a few months working on my original army of Black Templars, painting and playing and modeling them. Yesterday I had my first game 1500pts against my brothers marines and had an absolute blast. I was writing lists for the upcoming tournaments and the like, and was thinking. Screaming Jets... I don't like the idea of running an army that uses them across the board, but what about the odd raider with them? In the composition of my army, I usually run 4-6 squads of raiders in different capacities. Now, 10 warriors with a darklance is a common sight in my armies (I usually just keep them in the tank but sometimes I deploy them). So, I was thinking what if I gave their raiders screaming jets?
As a marine player I have come to love the versatility of a landspeeder with a mmelta and I usually deepstrike them to places that need them. Reserves in this game are becomming more and more important it seems. So I was thinking, what about a raider with the jets? You dont have to deploy it close to the enemy but you don't get shot before you get your shot off, and you might get a nice side shot on that chimera wall for example. Maybe even the thought of a raider deepstriking will make the enemy make mistakes? And lastly, what about the odd squad that gets stranded? well then you can make sure that a transport is sent to them.
These are just some thoughts that I have been having.
Have you had any success with such items?
Problem with screaming jets is they split your force up - I certainly think the idea has merit but not at 1500 as you cannot get anough raiders outside of the 5 man lance/raider setup (which is questionable IMO) for it to be justified.
I have seen a similar tactic used (namely used on an archon's raider) but it didn't fare too well, namely the archon and incubi were tooled to the gills and secondly it left the raider far in advance of the supporting elements and took a unit of wraithguard to the face and died horribly.
However, if I were to go for a screaming jets raider it would be with a 10 strong warrior unit armed with a shredder, splitnercannon and maybe syarite with terrorfex. Lots of points and pretty cool.
Not passengers can shoot until the turn after it deep strikes, so you'll be relying primarily on the single Raider weapon. Not a good option imo unless you just want to pin something with a Horrorfex.
Now jets on a Ravager? That has some merit, but you still only get one main weapon. Not a bad choice if you can make use of the secondary mode on the disintegrator, but it's still usually much better to start the Rav on the board.
I think I was misunderstood. The raider is empty. The 10 man squad with a darklance will be deployed on the table as bait/firesupport. The raider comes in and shoots something at a point on the field the enemy thought they were safe. I also give it a horrorfex just in case. I have used it in two games (both friendly) and in one it helped trap some marines, and prevent others from regrouping, escorting them off the table, and in the other it died... after forcing a pin check on an elite unit that was passed at a mighty -4!... oh well. But so far, fun.
Gotcha'. Sounds good to me.
It could actually work even better with 2 or 3 such Raiders. Trading away an extra DL shot against front armor for a chance at the rear armor is definitely worth it, so I'd consider it for any sniper teams as long as the points were available.
I have never fully understood how we can split up dedicated transports...
So if i have a 5 man warrior squad with a DL with a dedicated raider with SJ i can deepstrike the raider and start the warriors on the table?
Yes you can deepstrike empty raiders. The raiders still have 1 warrior crew. Someone has to pick up the crew after a long days work pillaging.
Thats not such a bad idea then...
When i play campaigns with my friend we play secret army, so i could really surprise him every now and again with some deep striking empty raiders and see what happens. =p
yeah. I have been using them on some friedly fluffy games with my brother. They tend to really turn the tide of battle sometimes. A few does not seem bad, but sometimes even just reserving the raider can be just as good, if you expect the enemy to come to you.
