Welcome to Librarium Online!
I just started playing and I kind of just picked the ones that look cool to me but did not realize the full extent of how Eldar is played at the time, now when playing in matches i get destroyed. I play against mostly Tau and any help would do. Is there anyway I can be decent without spending a lot more money in fixing my army?
My army right is
6 fire dragons 1 of those is an Exarch
10 dire avengers 1 of those is an Exarch
6 swooping hawks 1 of those is an Exarch
5 dark reapers 1 of those is an Exarch
1 warlock with a witchblade
1 farseer with a witchblade
1 falcon with scatter laser
1 Maugan Ra

Eldar are a force that needs to work together more than most armies. Very few of our units work well on their own. most actually work best when supported by a farseer. guided dire avengers, doomed targets for banshees.
Our most reliable troops tend to be dire avengers, but many swear by storm guardians. Wave Serpents really help get our units where you need them, i heartily recommend one for most of your units. Delivering guardians, banshees, and fire dragons. read some tactics or battle reports to get an idea how to use your transports, but they will make a big difference.
Eldar's best hq tends to be farseer's, do not over look spirit stones and using multiple powers.
Yeh, it all depends on what you want to do. Mech seems to be the way to go nowadays, for it reinforces eldar's strength - generally mobility and speed. Do you want to explain a bit on how you play?
Fear is of the unknown...
Well, you can't outshoot Tau, and there is no way to make him want to come to you, so you need to get to him. As it stands now the only things you have that can do that are your Swooping Hawks and Falcon, and neither is any real threat, Hawks especially are quite lousy in 5th. As Skyleap says, mech is the most common Eldar build at the moment, and will solve your problem. There are a few other ways to go, with infiltrate/deep strike/outflank, but they are not as reliable as full blown mech lists, jetbike lists also work quite well in this edition, and I'd suggest looking into using reserves to your advantage. Look for a blog called Way of Saim Hann by Fritz, he has several nice guides to common Eldar strategies and will get you started nicely.
It is somewhat ironic that despite the purpose of the codex to supposedly make a wider range of units and playstyles viable that things have sort of collapsed into a "play mech or you're screwed" situation.
If it makes you feel better eventually there will be a new codex, edition, and a general trickle of small rule changes. So maybe your army will be awesome someday.
I could give you advice on making your list decent against a number of different opponents. But Tau....
I think your one hope is to play extreme keep away. Avoid being in line of sight. If you must be exposed be in cover, maybe have the exposed unit have the HQ chars and fortune them for decent survivability.
Try and snipe if you can. Consider giving the reaper exarc his barage weapon so he can fire from cover. Similarly you could drop hawks in a hiddenish point on the board and skyleap to put down some templates. The objective is to try and get the tau player to come to you. If he does than suddenly you can start putting on the hurt , and if he doesn't maybe the game will come out a draw or you'll even manage to run over to some objectives at the last minute and survive.
You will need to buy some stuff imo. Unfortunately. You'll need 6 War walkers for a gun line, 2 Wraithlords for a foot-slogger, or many many Wave Serpents for mech. What I would suggest is getting an Avatar, 2 Wraithlords, fielding your Dragons in the Falcon with stones, Eldrad, and back it up with some of your other models. I can't remember where I saw a list like this but it seemed to do pretty well in all situations. Avatar's fearless bubble combined with Eldrads many fortunes and Dooms makes for a potent force. This is also the least expensive route.
Are Vypers a effective way to also play eldar????

Popular consensus says no. I don't use them because their added mobility doesn't justify their cost over Walkers and they can't fire both weapons and more over 6" anyway. I can see them being ok at higher points costs where your Heavy and Elite slots are all taken and 30 Warp Spiders just aren't an option.
I'm in almost the exact same boat as you. Here's my advice. Buy a box of Striking Scorpions. Use them with your farseer using fortune/doom. Keep Maugan Ra off your list. I bought him too, thinking he looked REALLY cool, then discovered that he is way too expensive for what you get out of him. I would put either the scorp/seer unit in the falcon and move them up or pair the dragons with the seer and put them in the falcon. Either way your first priority needs to be his battlesuits/tanks. I would go battlesuits first. Definitely use the Tempest Launcher with your Reaper Exarch and add Fast shot if you have the points. These were my favorite/most powerful unit in my army until I decided to swap them for a Swordlord who I now run with my Scorp/seer unit. I would use the Hawks to try and pop his tanks, and if you deep strike them, do it so his units don't have LOS on them, or they'll be dead before you get to move them. Hope this helps.
playing tau there arent alot of ways to go other than get to their lines and have fun with the squishies.if he is running d-fish those dragons need a wave serpent so they can quickly get in range and easily melt them. scatter laser is meh, id go with the eldar missile launcher. its blast template is AP4 and pinning and since fire warriors aren known for their armor or their LD it will be fairly effective. get bladestorm for dire avengers, and probably a wave serpent as well. the guardians arent really good, but if you take storm guardians then your in buisenes with those flamers. its also possible to use the wave serpent for the fire dragons, but since it isnt a dedicated transport you'll start first turn out of it. again tau arent known for their LD so take a sunrifle on your swooping hawks exarch, so amny shots, and ones gotta get them.
gl with your next game
