Hello, Last Monday I played a space marine player and beat him. He now wants a rematch but he is playing as Necrons. Since I have never played against necrons I was wondering if you could offer any help. We are playing a 1500 point battle.
Eldrad and 5 warlocks ( 4 destructer and 1 enchance)
Fire dragons in waveserpent ( 6 men, brightlance, fire pike and tank hunters)
Howling banshees in waveserpent ( 6 women, star cannon and mirror swords)
dire avengers (10 men, exarch , bladestorm and two shuriken catapults
dire avengers ( same upgrades as above)
Rangers (5 men)
Not sure what his list is but I think its going to be something like this
Necron lord with rez orb
2 squads of necron warriors
There will proberley be some more I Don't really know his list because i haven't played him. So if you have any advice please help!
I've only played against Necrons twice. The first game I won with a phase out, the second game I lost. The second game he was using a Monolith and I got distracted by it, from what I understand it's best to just try to get them to phase out. Try to ignore the Monolith as it is very difficult to get rid of, just stay out of it's range. I would consider adding Dark Reapers, they can really help out in this type of game, especially considering the best range you have as is for infantry is 18". Just a thought.
Oops, didn't see the Rangers on your list, but that's still only 5 shots at range. DR Exarch with Tempest Launcher and Fast Shot can really do some damage against his warriors.
If you beat Marines you will crush Necrons. An important rule is, he cannot get models back up unless another model of that same type exists within so many inches, I believe 12". So if you kill that Destroyer unit to a man, it cannot get back up. Same for the Wraith. Exploit this, a lot of Necron players don't know it.
And just Phase him out, it's why necrons don't win games right now. It's to easy to get rid of their slow moving infantry and just win, you don't even need to play the mission. Pay no attention to the Monolith, just ignore it. Try and keep away from it and accept it's shooting. Kill anything with We'll Be back that's not Warriors, than kill Warriors. Easy win.
on a further note from what everyone else has said: If you feel like you absolutely MUST kill that monolith, i've found wraithguard to be the antidote to monoliths. always glancing on 3's and penning on 5's will kill one within a round or 2 (depending on size of squad).
other than that, the only thing i can think of is switching out the mirrorswords for an Executioner. with destroyers and the necron lord being t5 it'll be a pain to wound them in cc, even with Doom. Bringing the Executioner will pretty much fix that problem.
Eldar W/D/L: 17/15/12
Ordo Malleus W/D/L: 24/3/4
Crimson Fists: In Progress
I would recommend utterly ignoring the Monolith, it's easier than you might think
As to the rest of his list, it shouldn't be too difficult if you've already beaten Marines. His models will pack a bit more of a punch and be slightly harder to kill, but they shouldn't be too difficult at all to phase out.I don't think the OP was looking for list advice so much as tactics help, and in his current list there is nothing that could really do away with the Monolith effectively.on a further note from what everyone else has said: If you feel like you absolutely MUST kill that monolith, i've found wraithguard to be the antidote to monoliths. always glancing on 3's and penning on 5's will kill one within a round or 2 (depending on size of squad).
I'm going to echo that you should just ignore the monolith. Sure, your fire dragons can glance it to death, but the odds are, small, even with tank hunters.
First thing you should do is get rid of the destroyers, they're just mean. They usually stay away from the main force too, so picking them off should be easy.
ok thanks for the advice. I'm properly going to ignore the monolith. If I charge my howling banshees into combat with his warriors is they any chance that I will kill them. Just checking because of the we'll be back rule
Oh will they die? They'll die for sure. The 'We'll be back' rule is ignored by attacks ignoring armour, instant death and Sweeping advances. The latter doesn't help should you have a resurrection orb/Tomb spyder/monolith nearby either.
They'll die and about half will get up again if in Res Orb range. What you want to do is focus them last because they have good odds of getting up and the other targets are more dangerous. Than keep making them fall over until he hits his Phase Out number.
