I went to GW the other day, and the fire for tabletop gaming was lit once again. And since conversions was my favorite part of the hobby, I wanted to throw this one out there even though I probably already have somewhere in the past.
As we all know, some of the DE models are ugly. Personally, the Grotesques, Archon, Warp Beasts and Wyches are uglyyyyyyyyyyy. I refuse to use the Warp Beasts, even though they're a GREAT unit to have. I thought of using Dark Elf Cold Ones, but the new ones come with saddles attached, and removing them would ruin the model. The older ones have no saddle but are a lot...fatter and not very fast-looking.
But the new Wood Elf Dryads look AWESOME. Yes they're trees (i think), but only because they're painted that way, and for a few details which can be removed. Besides that, with a mad paintjob they will definitely look like something a Wych would love to tangle with.
Thoughts, opinions, etc. please.
Well, I kinda like how wyches look.
But I've conversted my archon using parts from dark elf corsairs and wood elves as well as DE warriors and eldar dire avengers bits. I've also converted archite using daemonettes, corsairs, wood elves nad some other bits.
Really, darling, you must not squirm so. It spoils the overall effect.
yeah I also like wyches, but as a perfectionist modeller I do understand why you dislike them. Their proportions aren't good, they faces could be better, everythign could be done better. Back 12 years ago however, they were just awesome, when you looked at other armies.
Warp beasts aren't a great unit to have like you say, they're kinda hard to use. you need to get them in cc, without getting killed and then you probably lose them lol, if you're lucky, they might make it into a second cc. I don't fully dislike those models ,but I certainly won't have 6 warp beast squads, all composed of the same boring models. Several alternatives: cold ones, chaos hounds, tyranids, etc...
Dark elf witches are a nice alternative for wyches, I have both in my army. I still love our old wyches, but I also love how the witches, so I had t buy some of those as well.
The archon doesn't look that good, I do still like him somewhat, though he's one of my worst looking HQs, even with a cool paintjob. Conversion is the best way to get a good archon so far.
Grotesques: several options: those dryads are one of them, I've seen a guy used these as grots, zombies are another option, or just converting, or making heavy use of greenstuff. I would still buy the 4 grots we have. I'll also put some possessed as grots, I got them as a gift and instead of selling them, I decided to keep them as grots. Nobody seems to dislike this idea so far.
I'm not a fan of mixing with dark elf parts, as long as you don't exagerate, I still want my dark eldar to be 40k and not too fantasy like
It's also quite expensive anyway. You'll still need dark eldar parts for guns, etc...
I combine with a bit of everything, chaos, dark elf, eldar. Dark eldar + eldar bitz are a good alternative to better looking models.
I like converting in general, take a look at my blog, you might get inspired. I do stay loyal to our old models, but I do convert a lot.
I like the warp beast models, quite alot in fact! However they are a bit underpowered currently. They have there uses, but realistically they don't quite have enough hitting power, in a new codex i'd like them be made daemon with a 5+ invul and rending...
I have 10 Corsairs as a Wych Squad (Using pistols from the leftover warriors, and the parts provided as wych weapons)
I have 6 Harliquins as a Wych Squad (I sometimes join the beastmaster as the Succubus making a 7 man squad), this may be a useful buy if harli's are in the new codex.
Dark Elf Lokir Fellheart is my Dracite, runs well with the corsairs obviously.
My Mandrakes/Grotesques (i use the same models) are just bloodletters mixed with warrior bits. I know thats a bit random, but i like them.
My Haemocolous are a mix of eldar and dark eldar parts...not that fluffy really but i they fit in with the rest of my army.
I've use Kroot carnivores as Grotesques - I call them Krootesques. Absolutely love how they came out and no doubt they embrace the whole tortured slave theme wonderfully.
I know others have used Dark Elf Shades as Mandrakes
and another beautiful conversion I performed was converting Dark Elf Witches into Dark Eldar Wyches - they are a little smaller but the more frail they look the more satisfaction I have when I see a half naked chick take down the burly men of the empire.
Perhaps I can post a few pics soon.
