So uh, not sure if this is talked about anywhere else but...
I was reading the codex... and the XV8 says it can choose any weapons listed in the battle suit weapon/gear section of the codex. I noticed that the railgun is a listed battle suit weapon.
Now obviously it is listed because the XV88 uses it, and is thus a battle suit weapon... but likewise the Smart Missile System is a 'battle suit' weapon but can be equipped on all of our vehicles. Other than the fact that the railgun is not given a point value in the battle suit weapon list, there seems to be no rule excluding the XV8 from carrying one. The hammerhead lists the railgun at 50 points. With the 5th edition codex, jump jet are considered relentless meaning heavy weapons can be fired even with a move, meaning a XV8 would not loose any mobility carrying one.
I am sure if it was asked of GW they would respond with a no XV8's cannot equip railguns, and if anyone tries my justification in a game it is likely rule pandering, but I figure it is worth rambling about in a forum. Maybe in the 5th Ed codex we will see it properly listed?
If it is already talked about in one of the FAQs I apologize as I do not have any of them.
no it's not???
your eyes are wonky
the only weapons an XV8 can choose from, and the only weapons LISTED are AFP,BC,CIB,F,FB,MP,PR

Page 27 of the Tau Codex.
It is not in the special boxed in list, but in the further breakdown of weapons it is listed. Which is why I said it has no point cost listed. =) Same with the Smart Missile System.
It is not listed under "battlesuit weapons systems" which is what you are allowed to take, according to the line "All models with battlesuits must take a number of battlesuit weapons and/or support systems, as detailed in their army list entry." (p.25).
The railgun is certainly in the armoury, but it is not listed under battlesuit weapon systems, and consequently, cannot be purchased.
Yes, and no.
Obviously it is not setup to allow us to choose those weapons and gear, and they are listed because other suits use them intrinsically. My point is that they -are- battle suit wargear, which means it's not entirely unreasonable to have them mounted on XV8 chasis. Rules do not allow this currently, but would it not be awesome if we could?
We can equip shield generators currently, why not stealth fields in the future? Or what about railguns and smart missile systems? Forgeworld has added a few of those to their model line. I think the XV81 has Smart Missile System built into it, and the new XV9 commander seems to have some form of railgun.
My point here is not to argue that we can legally mount them as our codex is, but to talk about the gear itself and see what people's general opinion is on the prospect.
Sorry to have ruffled feathers yeesh. =P
If you can have a suit take railguns, and fly around, what would be the point of broadsides?
a railgun isn't just a gun. it's a gun with a whole bunch of batteries and capacitors to power it. so much so, that when mounted on a Tau tank chasis, the tank can't carry troops anymore because its so full of weapon powering systems.
the reason XV88s don't have jet packs is because the need the room to carry all that extra hardware to fire their Railguns.
THIS is why you can't put rail guns on XV8s: to be an XV8 means to have a jet pack, and having a railgun to fire means you loose the jet pack so that you can carry the necesary equipment to fire a railgun. So an XV8 with a railgun doesn't have a jet pack. so it's an XV88
if there was a suit with jets pack and a railgun, it would be much bigger than an XV8.
