Welcome to Librarium Online!
Greetings Tau. This is my first foray into this sub-forum, coming over from the Space Marine one. A friend and I are learning how to play the Tau at the same time, so neither of us are experts on the rules for them yet. We played a game over the weekend and of course some questions came up that I didn't have the answers to and hopefully I can get some insight here.
First, on the Hammerhead, you purchase the Burst Cannon secondary weapon at 10 points for 2 guns, not twin linked guns. In the event of a weapon destroyed result, you only take off 1 gun, correct? I believe this is the same as sponsons on a Predator, but just wanting to confirm. Second, another thing I just want to confirm is that say a XV8 has a single shield drone and they receive 2 AP2 wounds from a single enemy unit. You place one wound on the drone and it takes the invul save and the other wound on the XV8 and he doesn't get the invul save, correct? Basically the drone is a single wound meat shield of sorts, not actually giving the suit itself the benefits of an invul save.
Finally, for now at least, how are drones worked out for KP missions? Do they fall under the retinue rule since the drones cannot leave the unit they were bought for, but count in terms of morale checks like a normal unit? And for ones bought on a vehicle and then dismount, are they like a new fast attack choice and if destroyed, would give up a KP? With the saying that they dismount like infantry, and also have an entry in the army list as an actual choice, sounds more like they are more of an infantry unit than just an upgrade subsystem to a vehicle.
Thanks in advance! I'll probably be back with more questions as we play more games. Oh, and for the curious, you can read up on the battle here: http://ondeathswings.blogspot.com/ Not to spoil it, but the Tau did very well against my new Blood Angels.
Re the Burst Cannons question: I'm not 100% sure on that one, but reading the rules about "Weapon Destroyed", you only remove a single weapon (unless it's a Dreadnought CCW in which case the built-in weapon is also lost). With the BCs being able to shoot independently of each other, I agree that it makes sense to only remove one of them. The SMS is different, as it is a single system even though there are two pods.
Nope, Shield Drones do not confer an invulnerable save on their controller. So the way you played it was correct: an invulnerable save on the drone and a wound suffered on the suit.
Drones on an XV8 commander are not a retinue, they are wargear so do not give up KPs.
Gun Drones dismounting from a Devilfish do become a 2-man Gun Drone squadron with the statline as found in the Codex. If both are killed after having disembarked then yes, they therefore will cost you a KP. Confirmation of this can be found in the Tau Empire FAQ.
Welcome to The Greater Good, by the way!

Hey, thanks eiglepulper! Glad to see we played it correctly on the first go, haha. Oh, here's a quick follow up, to be clear. XV8s aren't relentless per the BRB right? The suit rule just covers rapid fire weapons as counted as not moving still and can't assault after firing rapid fire weapons? Seems like it's a Relentless-lite kind of rule, but not sure if for 5th Ed they just gave them the full rule or not. I went to check the FAQ and didn't see anything to avoid it being an obvious find. I also found a link to Advanced Tau Tactica from a Tau reader on my blog. I'll give this a look at tonight as well for more help in lists and rules.

XV8s are all Relentless. Not that it matters much, but it does mean that they can always shoot their plasma rifles a full 24" if they wish. And that they can always assault even after rapid-firing with their plasma rifles ... though I wouldn't recommend that most of the time!
ninjabackhand: point and click, again, really? even after i give you an military term "shock tactic" you still call it point and click.
