    think about it,

a country goes from feudal system to modern warfare and political system in around 10 years, thats the japanese meiji era

a planet (i dont know the exact number of the first tau planets) goes from a plains people with no great tech to a intergalactic superpower in a matter of around a century (thats not accurate, but you get my point)

they are very similar, GW likes to us history to make fluff for 40k

Pain is life, while I feel pain I still live, and while I still live I will seek vengance.
We are few but strong in will
    The last with pagan blood
We fought the world with burning steel
Now we sit in Hall of Gods

    GW takes stuff from everything.

One example: Dark Angel leader dude "Azrael" is actually a Dark Archangel of Death fromt the judeo-christian theology and history, actually my favorite Dark Archangel (yes i do believe in that kinda of stuff).

The "Inqusition" is taken from the actual Catholic Inquisition too.

That's just some of the stuff, there are alot more.
"And whoever wants to be a creator in good and evil, must first be an annihilator and break values. Thus the highest evil belongs to the greatest goodness: but this is--being creative."

and its no coincidence that the tau range came out at exactly the same time GW opened its first major japanese stores and big push in the east.
