Welcome to Librarium Online!
I just picked up a deff dread the other day, pretty sure Im gonna make it with all DCCW's. I wanted to see how everyone uses theirs or any tricks they use, particularly when they dont have Kans as well. Im trying to figure out how best to use the dread with my current army setup, my only other vehicles are a pair of trukks (i play mech/footslogging hybrid) so I know this guy is gonna draw a LOT of fire. Eventually I want to get a box of Kans to run in front of the dread to screen him but in the meantime Im looking for tactics so post up!

That's one good strategy right there. If he draws fire away from your trukks he does his job. Be sure to always run. A Dread is also a great response to any drop pods or outflankers.
I never managed to use a dread offensive. It'll take a month of sundays to reach enemy lines and all under heavy fire. On average he lives 0,5 turns. And If you stop to shoot you'll miss and need even more turns to reach em.
Perhaps if you run several of them a dreadwall list with Dreads and kanz. I heard that the Imperial armour 8 book have a dread codex.*drool*
Too bad they are so expensive comapred with the kanz. I'll take 3 kanz over a dread any day of the week.

Dreads get WAY too expensive for my taste if you load them up with extra close combat weapons. Instead, I'd give it 2 skorchas. They're fantastic for taking out infantry, they're dirt cheap, and the deff dread's low BS won't matter, since it's a template weapon. Besides, 2 attacks won't make that much of a difference in close combat, at least not enough to warrant their cost.
Dreads are great for distracting, drawing away enemy fire, and tying up infantry that don't have a way of dealing with AR12. Even a buried powerklaw will usually not do much against a dread, unless they roll lucky.
Oh, and I almost forgot, if you have one as a troop choice (if you take a big mek), then in dawn of war missions I like to sit the deff dread right in the center of the board. Not only does it distract your opponent, but it severely limits where he can place his 2 troops/hq and infiltrators.
"Any job worth doing, is worth doing with a powerklaw."
Run them foreward, headlong into the enemy! I agree with Grax's point on the skorchas, for some reason they're a super-cheap option and make the dred a very versatile threat that can torch hordes and chop up vehicles and elites.
One apocolyptic tactic that I'm excited to try is loading a dred in a battlefortress super-heavy tank. My plan is to load an all cc dred (or maybe a skorcha dred) in with a unit of 20 boyz with the fixins. They'll pack a 1-2 punch together with a dual charge.
Enjoy your dred model, they're beautiful!
I'm with Grax on this, i run them with two Skorchas and go squishy huntin. Its still alot of points for a unit that might be better off w/ Kanz.
I usually run one in troops with 2 skorcha and armour plates and i'm pleased with it most of the time
Great distraction tbh !
I use 3 CCW's and a big shoota. The extra attack doesn't make a whole ton of difference, but it gives him something to do if he's immobilized.
I sometimes use a dual skorcha dread to hang in cover near my objective sitting lootas and grots. Good defense against anything coming to steal the objective.
I run one with three DCCW and one skorcha and i give him grot riggers. I try to keep him in cover as much as I can and run with him always and the grot riggers surprisingly help alot for only 5 points
