Welcome to Librarium Online!
I'm looking to construct a vanguard themed army but have encountered two problems in 5th ed codex.
According to texts Vanguards use: Genestealers, Lictors & Gargoyles almost exclusively.
So problems are:
1. No suitable HQ unit so expect my best bet is to field the cheapest (Tyranid prime) and sit it on one of 'my' objectives to at the least contest it, perhaps give it regen?
2. Gargoyles down field will be out of Synapse as only the above HQ provides it so they will be of limited use, solution don't use them?
This would make my starting 1kpts:
HQ Tyranid prime with regen
Troops 1: 9 Vanilla Genestealer with Broodlord
Troops 2: 9 Vanilla Genestealer with Broodlord
Elite 1: 3 Lictor brood
Elite 2: Deathleaper
Elite 3: 10 Ymgarl genestealer brood
This will be a very odd force as half its pointage starts the game off the table in reserve.
Anyone any thoughts on this other than don't do it?

Your only half way there if you want to run this sorta this. You cannot afford to have half your list off at the best of times, and without Hive commander the rest will come in peicemeal.
My advice? Drop the prime, a lictor or 2 and a few ymgarls to buy yourself a winged hive tyrant with Hive commander. Then play your list as all reserve.
If you need to justify it, say that the Hive Tyrant is commanding the scout aspect of the swarm.
Your friendly neighbourhood gargantuan creature
I like your suggestion except for all in reserve, by this do you mean everything or just the elites that have to or can? If you mean everything then the Hive commander is less useful as I don't think I get the benefit until he is on the table and he may not turn up until very late.
If he & 2 genestealer brood are the only units on the table at the start I can't see him lasting long even if cover is his friend although being able to move as jump infantry will help.
The current consensus where I play is it works offtable (Tyrant has to be alive) as such all reserve armies are viable. Something like winged tyrant, 3 trygon, doom, 3 or 4 stealer broods is fun. IMHO the trygon are pretty vital to pop vehicles, although Ymgar stealers or lictor may be able to perform that function for you.
I think the winged Hive Tyrant idea will work well. Tyranids are meant to seed an area they plan to invade with Spore mines. Use some Spore mine clusters to help fill up fast attack. They can be put into your opponent's deployment zone before he deploys to mess up his plans, that may help if you are using things that are often kept in reserve. You can also use a Harpy if you want, it often goes scouting with Gargoyles.
Hey, don't forget the the parasite is also an HQ. Or you could run the prime (hell the Tyrant) modelled as a genestealer patriarch.
trygon primes could solve your downfield synapse issues
A near-exclusive "Vangaurd" force that sticks to (nearly only) 'stealers, lictors, and gargoyles would be an awful army list. Like Heirodule said, I wouldn't attempt to represent that type of army so literally and in so limited a fashion. Just be sure to include some of each unit in your army and call it "Vanguard". Job done.
ninjabackhand: point and click, again, really? even after i give you an military term "shock tactic" you still call it point and click.
