Welcome to Librarium Online!
I wanted to start up a thread on the foundations of the uses bewteen the different creatures with the suffix of Thrope. I am hence refering to the Zoanthrope and the Venomthrope. I understand that each have subtle variations amongst each other, however they are each designed to be used as support organisms.
So, let's discuss the different uses for them. How would you go about setting up a formation with a squad of Zoans, and then a squad of Venoms? Would you ever target certain types of units with each of them, or are they more of all-rounders? What would be the best way to support the other units of you army? Are there certain units, like Carnifexes, or Hormogaunts, that do not need to rely on them at all?
Anything you can think of that would help other people who are thinking about taking them can be posted here, and would be very helpful in making a decision? Finally, if you are feeling brave, have your say about which unit has a place personally in your army. Or, would you rather take both of them?
All input is of course welcome, and any queries can be remedied.
Light a fire for a man, and he will be warm for a night. Light a man on fire, and he will be warm for the rest of his life.
For zoanthropes I almost always put 2-3 of them into a pod. I drop them into the enemy, along with some MCs. Their primary target is always heavy armor. Lacking that I target light armor. Zoanthropes are the nids best ant-armor unit in the game, always use them as such.
Venomthropes are really a support unit. The best use for them is following your line while providing the cover save and charge protection. Unfortunately in their own right, venomthropes are very weak and easy to blow up. A wise opponent will always take them out first.
I always take zoanthropes, they are just too good to pass up. I avoid venomthropes like the plague. They take up a valuable special slot that I'd rather use for a more effective unit.
Ive just gotta say that for me, your first paragraph could hardly be more wrong! Zoanthropes in no way a support creature (they offer nothing to the rest of your force) and the differences are hardly subtle! Ones a very hard unit thats designed to blow tanks to heaven and back, the other is a bug thats incredibly fragile, but supports most of your army (even if there are better alternatives)
So im not going to comment on zoans in a supporting role, because they sont support. What they do is blow tanks open, which is an invaluable asset make no mistake
Venomthropes however are the supporting bug. Id still never take them however. For one they contest an elite slot, which id rather fill with zoans, Hive guard, doom or deathleaper. Secondly you, the player, can do their job better than they can! Simply layer your force. Guants infront of mid sized creatures, and mid sized over MCs. The upside to this is that your troops gain a 4+ save, and it cant be stripped as easily as the venomthropes can.
Whilst they dangerous terrain and defensive grenades are nice, its far too easy to remove, and a smart opponent will make every effort to kill them, in order to charge safely.
Well thats my thoughts anyway.
Your friendly neighbourhood gargantuan creature
I have used venom thropes to great use in a monstrous type army with lots of tervigons and carnifexes where the thropes can hide and protect the big creatures from ding to easily. To me venomthropes are what people would compare to flashgitz of orks where most find them useless but are really handy if used correctly. But i run only 1 so it can more easily hide behind the biggies.
My take on the Malanthrope is that first it is usually an Apocalypse unit. However there are two different sets of rules for it. One set is in Imperial armour Apocalypse and the other is in Imperial armour volume 4 the Anphellion project. Both are more or less the same except that the one in the Apocalypse book ignores armour saves and it need not take Rippers to be used.
The other version isn't as dangerous but it's rules are less dangerous and it can therefore be used in normal games without any problems, this makes it easier to use. The questions about this thing really arise with the upgrades such as feeder tendrils that it has, these have no rules now and there is no proper convention on what to do in there circumstances.
The Malanthrope is by far the coolest of the three Thrope models, that may not have much to do with using our Thropes but it does make it loads of fun to have one.
Zoanthropes are good at blowing tanks up and barring that can put the hurt on meqs, the need a spore to work most effectively. Beyond that I am not really sure what more can be said for them.
Venomthropes on the other hand make me sad. On the one hand I love their mobile cover and the defensive grenades they bestow, which is a huge bonus in my opinion. The part that makes me sad is that as much as I want to use them, they share slots with all of our most effective anti-tank and harrassment units. Frankly I can't bring myself to give up my hive guard, zoeys, doom, or deathleaper to even really try a venomthrope out.
If they had somehow shoehorned the ol' gasbag into the fast attack section, I would take some in an instant.
"I am the architect of fate!"
The only time I've used a venomthrope is in an Apocalypse game. I used it to give my Heirophant and Heirodule cover. Otherwise, in regular games, the Tyranid elites are so stacked that I just can't fit them in (and even if there were more elite slots, I'd probably end up taking more hive guards, zoans and ymgarls).
With the exception of the tervigon, support units always take a back seat to an offensive unit in my lists.
