Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hey there, I have allways been interested in the 40k world and have decided to join in on the fun.
I think painting and playing tyranids will be a blast and I am looking for some guidance on how to start a fun to play hoard style army.
I have got the tyranids codex and will try and find an Aobr rule book from ebay.
I will buy a battleforce and a hive tyrant to start off with and then eventually I hope to feild an army along the lines of
-Hive tyrant with 3x brood guard- ( I like the idea of being able to keep the hq alive )
- 2 carnifex-
- 2 Zoanthropes-
Then fill up my points with lots of gaunts warriors and genestealers.
I also like the idea of having a mawlock bursting behind enemy lines and tearing some stuff up.
Once I get the battle force and the hive tyrant, what would be good things to buy and expand my tyranid army with?
Hello and welcome, not only to LO, but to the 40k universe!
So fun but hordy? Well your basic unit is going to be hormaguants, with a set of toxin sacs. In 40k terms these are very fast, and can actually take most things on in a fight, because of being poisoned, so they never need worse than a 4+ to wound. Very handy indeed.
Also one of the bigeest things you need to consider in an Nid army is that anti-tank is your main concern. I the current edition of the rules, transports and vehicles are king. So especially for tyranids, (who are great at killing the blokes inside, not so great at getting to them) you need to have a lot of anti-armour. The best bet is Hive guard (from range anyway.) Certainly you want some of them.
As you say, genestealers are very good so feel free to include them. The best way to run zoanthropes is a group of 2-3 in a mycetic spore. Drop them next to a vehicle and destroy it.
If your looking for a swarm list, the you may want to consider a tervigon. Use him to produce even more guants, or make your curent ones more survivble. Its a very useful unit.
Final peice of advice, on the whole trygons are better than carnifexs. Carnifexs are still useful, but 9/10, take a trygon.
if you post a list of what you want to start with, we can take it from there.
But in the meantime, welcome and good luck in the future!
Your friendly neighbourhood gargantuan creature
Thanks for the swift reply,
I have been conidering anti armour and I figured that the zoanthrope would be a good choice and originally i thought that the tryant guard and brood guard should all be CC but after hearing what you said it would be a good idea to have the hq and guard shooty.
I love the look of the trygon and if it is a viable choice over the carnifex then that would be awesome, hopefully I could feild more then one of them.
are the tyrant guard worth having? or would it be better to use the hive guard?
I assume the tyrand guard is for a cc tyrant and the hive guard for a shooty tyrant
I have also heard that a broodlord is a good unit to have, perhaps I could team him up with some warriors for a strong asasult core to go with my massive gaunt spam.
I figure the battleforce and a hq will give me a good start, then perhaps some more gaunts.
I definately want to get my hands on a mawloc/tyrgon, hopefully my painting skills will be up to scratch by then to do justice to the awesome model.
If you take a walking Tyrant (shooty or CC) it's a good idea to have a Tyrant Guard or two with him. As they don't take up an FOC spot, you can have the Hive Guard as well. Despite have the word "guard" in their name, Hive Guard don't have to be anywhere near the Tyrant (Tyrant can't join them as an IC anyway)
Hello and welcome!
FWIW, I actually recommend avoiding the 'nid battleforce. It is only Troops, and quite simply there is no decent army list you can build that will let you use all of those models at once. I suggest just buying up the models you need to build the list you want and skip the useless bundle. It's not that impressive at savings anyway if you actually add up the raw costs and compare.
As for your proposed army list core:
Don't take zoanthropes unless you do one of two things.
* Also take a Prime HQ to join to the zoeys to help absorb firepower as you walk them across the battlefield. Zoeys 3++ save looks impressive, but a rapid-firing Marines unit will dissuade you of that notion right quick with puny bolter shots.
* Put them in a mycetic spore for deep-striking. But don't do this unless you are playing a reserves-focused army. Otherwise you risk having them off the table when you need them most. (And they're still going to get killed immediately when they arrive, so you can only count on their awesome shot once. You have to make it count!)
If you're not doing either of these things -- and at least at this stage it sounds like you're not -- then skip the zoeys.
Hive guard would be a better choice. As would heavy venom cannons (e.g., on Tyrants, Carnifexes, Harpies). Lictors can get S6 shots at rear armour when they appear.
Otherwise, my best recommendation is to have a good read through the codex and figure out what units you like best and then come back here and get some help trying to make a coherent army list out of them. Rest assured that every unit in the codex can be put to good use ... but not every army list can use every unit effectively. Heirodule says that Trygons are just flat out better than carnifexes ... that simply isn't true. We all prefer some units over others for various reasons, but all that matters is that you are using units you like and that the units you like serve a real purpose in an army list. Just throwing units together is unwise.
ninjabackhand: point and click, again, really? even after i give you an military term "shock tactic" you still call it point and click.

I will be going overseas for about amonth, once I get back I will hopefully be able to start building an army and getting some games under my belt,
I have been having a read through the codex and the forums.
At this stage the units that I would like to include are
gaunts and genestealers
shooty warriors (pehaps a broodlord later on)
2x Tyrant guard or 2x Hiveguard,( I love the look of the tyrant guard, but the hiveguards shooting sounds pretty formiddable)
Tyrgon and the Mawlock I will have to use in games to see wich set up I like the best
I also would like to include some Raveners and the Lictor / Death Leaper look amazing too, allthough I hear they are rather fragile.
I hope to hit you guys up in about a month and then hopefully have some pics to show of my painting efforts.
