Ok, so here's the back-story with this post. My first army was Necrons, but as I've grown impatient with getting myself smacked off the board consistently, I decided to look at building a new army. I was very close to building a Black Templar army, was strongly considering a Chaos SM army as well (Tzeench in particular) - but never Orks. At first glance, I hated Orks. They were stupid creatures, goofy-looking, and fairly unpredictable. Honestly, who would want an army that doesn't know what their Psyker is going to do, or how many shots their Heavy Support gets? They just struck me as this rag-tag bunch of goffs doing everything poorly.
Then, I bought the codex. It became really clear after a month or so of reading that ALL the reasons I hated the Orks were the reasons they are so brilliant! As I studied the miniature range, I found myself laughing at the absolute hilarity of the army. The models are absolutely brilliant. See, Necrons were all about order and similarity - a silent phalanx of troops slowly marching across the battlefield. The Orks embody a totally different concept - fight with whatever you have available.
So that said, I've been totally bit by the "Waaagh bug" and have been running various army concepts through my head for a while now. I'm not exactly the type of person to build 500 points worth of an army and see how I like it - I've committed to the Orks. So what I'm looking for here, are some thoughts to my army concept - if there are things I should be omitting, or things I should be including.
DISCLAIMER - If this should be in the Army List Forum, please feel free to move it. I'm posting it here because it's not a specific list, rather, an army concept.
So here's the idea:
It's a speed-based army, HQ includes Wazdakka and a Mek w/ KFF
I would capitalize on several trukks with slugga boyz and a nob - fairly standard there
Because I'm including Wazdakka, I would have a unit of Biker Boyz - question on this later on.
I also like the idea of a tooled out Biker Nob unit that Wazdakka would join. (The regular Biker Boyz would have a nob w/ PK, etc.)
I guess the real question is how much of the Bikers do I need? Running a large group of boyz AND a tooled out group of nobs is going to get quite pricey points-wise. Right now, I'm planning on four trukks, all protected by the KFF. But with the bikes included, I seem to run out of points fairly quickly. I'm aiming between 1500 and 2000 (and I know you can't run everything) but it seems that if I run what I want, there are no points left to take Warbuggies, or Kopters.
So any suggestions or ideas from those who run a speed army? Do you prefer to run several small squads of bikers, or one big squad. If I'm tooling out a Nob squad, just how much do you tool it out? (I was going w/ 8 guys, two PK, two big choppa, two regular mooks, one with a Waaagh banner, and one painboy.) Is four trukks too many, too few? People always suggest Lootas, but would they be viable here? (Provided I have the points to buy them)
I do believe Orks should be played Mythbuster style: "If it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing!"
So with that, I thank you in advance for your help. Oh, and once my boyz are painted, I'll post some pictures of the Waaagh Ur-Blitz.
Speed freaks is a fun army, you'll have a good time with a list like this.
4 Trukks is good, but always get a unit of grots as well, you want something to leave behind to grab objectives on your side of the board while the rest of the horde runs off to smash stuff.
Wazdakka is great, but i've always had better luck running him with a group of 12 normal bikers (w/ nob w/ PK) then if you boost (waz can still shoot and you're not losing as much with just normal boyz with him)
Nob biker squads are solid, buy a painboy and have fun converting a biker into one, if i run nob bikers i do 6-7 bikers, 2 PK's, 2 Big Choppas, 3 combi skorchas
I'd get a battlewagon for the Mek w/ KFF, fill it with burna boyz for some drive by flamage or fill it with shoota boyz, both are really solid, convert a deff rolla, with the ruling that they can hit vehicles they're our most reliable means of busting tanks.
Welcome to the WAAAAGGHHHH!
I agree with everything Mekgutwrencha posted (including his icon...hammanna hammanna hammanna...) except one: I don't like burna boyz that much. They're not bad, but you need to fill out troops, and Ork troops are almost as good as burnas at taking out infantry. I'd stick with the boyz.
Trukks, Battlewagons, Warbikes, Warbosses, Nobz, and the KFF are all staples of a fast Ork army (generally known as 'Speed Freaks'). Wazdakka is more for armies that have 3-4 units of warbikes. I generally use warbikes in smaller units of 5-6 with a nob, powerklaw, and bosspole. In any army, don't forget to include one unit of troops that can sit on an objective in your own deployment zone, without costing too much points. For this, I like 12-19 grots.
"Any job worth doing, is worth doing with a powerklaw."
Thank you for your input. I had totally forgotten about taking a unit of Grots to hang back and nab objectives. I've seen the burnas-in-a-battlewagon trick done once before, and I thought it was a thing of epic orky glory; loved it! But it seems a bit pricey, especially if I'm going to be tricking out some bikers. I'd love to put a battlewagon on the table, but how has it held up with trukks.
Perhaps I should clarify. I imagine the trukks speeding off ahead, but if the Mek and KFF are in the BW, won't they be left behind and eventually the trukks will be out of the forcefield's protection? If I were to take that type of speed freak army, maybe forgoing Wazdakka and the bikes in favor for Trukks, a Battlewagon or two and a mess of Warbuggies to run screens would be a wise idea.
Again, thank you for your input and advice!
Deploy the BW 12" from your edge and the trukks spread out around it. In your first turn your trukks drives flat out (18") and your BW 12". The trukks are still within 6" of the BW. In your second turn the trukks should reach your enemy lines and your boyz disembark and charge. Then your trukks have done their job.
Trukks are fun but fragile. Expect to loose 1 or two each round.
If you won't more solid numbers in your speed force consider Stormboys. potential 24" charge range can give an opponent a nasty surprise. The new models with their added height also make decent screens aswell.
