We've been talking about what Aun should be in the next codex...but what about our other misfit friends? Just as equally absent from most lists are the Vespid Stingwings. I find that they just don't fit in most lists. It's just better to take more crisis suits with longer range weapons. So, what do we need to do to get the Vespid up to snuff with the rest of our units?
Personally, I would like them to be a little better at close combat. It seems to be what some of the fluff points to. I read the description of them (only in some fluff) and it mentioned diamond hard claws. Maybe giving them rending on a roll of 6 to wound, not unlike the cyclic ion blaster.
The Vespid do go in combat on I5, but only have one attack...at WS3...less than desirable. If they had another attack, or higher weapon skill, they would be slightly more effective. They cost as much as a Space Marine...why don't they're stat lines compare? I know that they have fleet, and are fancy at flying through terrain, but they have Ld6 as opposed to the stalwart and steadfast Marines. One Stingwing kicks it and the rest are quite likely to run for their lives and never look back.
I don't really have a problem with the 5+ armor save, but one always wishes it was better... at least they get one (cough*Kroot*cough)
Last but not least, is the Vespid Neutron Blaster...
While S5 Ap3 is quite nice, the range is very limited at 12". It would be nice to see that 18" range that everyone else gets...or be able to switch out the Neutron Blaster for a Fusion Blaster at S8 Ap1. Another option would be to take the weapon from assault 1 to assault 2. Firing within 12" of your target means that you are going to be within rapid fire range of their guns. Once again, less than desirable. The second shot means that you have a better chance to survive. Heck, the codex fluff brags about how nasty their weapons were before the Tau even got there...I wanna see some of those.
These are just a few ideas to toss out there. I'd like to use these guys, but they just don't have a place in my lists.
My platform is RL, you'd be surprised at the quality of the graphics!
Knowing GW... they are likely to take something no one uses... like Vespids, and make them totally awesome to get us to buy more models we haven't owned due to their suckyness.
Don't give up hope comrade!
This would be perfect, seeing as I bought the models before realising how useless they were! The most probable change they'll make would be the increase of WS and changing the guns to assault 2, I think.
The only 2 changes I think are reasonable would be: Assault 2 weapons, 4+ armour save. At this point they are a jump/shoot/assault unit (or at least they seem to be), and they really need that firepower to soften up the enemy, as well as a little bit more survivablity. With these, I might be able to deal with the points cost as reasonable (subject to actual game testing, of course)
What they need:
What i want them to have:
WS4 at least
There are three kinds of people in this world, those who can count and those who cannot.
I do use Vespid on occaision, they are not good enough to be a mainstay but they certainly do add to the game.
A few points,
if they are not getting a 4+ cover save then you are doing it wrong. They are a mop-up team not an Alpha Strike team. They support suits by finishing off the last few dregs of a squad. Not everything is a MEQ there are plenty of GEQ's out there that the vespid can stomp in combat. 12" move, d6" fleet and 6" charge gives a very nice threat zone for a charge on GEQ.
But at the end of the day they cannot do anything that your crisis suits cannot do better, but they are fun.

The "A Smart Player Will..." theory is a complete paradox. If we make an assumption that everything we do is outsmarted, then theoretically we can never win.
Assault 2 guns personally, that and their ability to use marklight tokens due to the Strain Leader makes them pretty nasty support unit when used with an XV8 Battleuit team. Who says that they're LD6, the Strain Leader is included in the cost and he has LD9, although due to the wound allocation rules and the small numbers of their squad does mean that their odds of survivability are pathetically low.
I've also got the models to paint more than play with them , but I'm waiting for that glorious day when they can come out of their box and into the harsh sunlight of retribution. They'll have their chance as it's only a matter of time, now that good ol' Phil Kelly is now writing the book as we speak .
The Vespid are kind of a 1 trick pony. If you know how to use that trick they can be very effective but you need good positioning, ML support and some decent tactical play to get them to work right. I have played with them in the past and just having them in my back field was enough to keep the fear of what they can do to shift my opponents play. Unfortunately they do have the habit of melting at inconvenient times. One flamer for example can wreck this unit.
- Never underestimate the power of human stupidity.
do you think they'll give the kroot or vespid the furious charge special rule???
