Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hello, all! I have been into 40K for about a year, hovering around this forum and ATT for the most part. I am looking to build a really fun and funny ork army that has some potential for decent games. I am not looking for specific loadouts, per say, but rather for what I should pick up in order to construct a very entertaining army. Thus far I have decided on at least one warphead (Zogwort, possibly) as my HQ. A Mek with the Shock Attack Gun or another warphead is the other. The Warphead is a must... the one in a million chance that he gets to deepstrike a mob of 30 boyz into the midst of the enemy is too much to pass on. Hell, even the warper blowing up his own unit is funny!
I have also set my heart on Tankbustas (sorry, Grax >.<). Why? Two words: bomb squigs. One of the funniest concepts in the ork codex. They will have to have a looted wagon for transport in order to help counter their .... sub-subpar performance.
Stormboyz are also a must. Just the concept of some ork spiraling out of control and exploding on the horizon makes me giggle.
What other units do the ork regulars here recommend? Which units in the book are fun and entertaining to play? I am looking for an entertaining and moderately effective list for casual play against other players who do not necessarily go for the 'Ard Boyz style armies. Note that humor trumps efficiency in this case. I want an army that is fun to play and do not care all that much about dominance on the battlefield. My normal games are 1500 points, which should give you an idea of what range of units I can field in a typical game.
Thanks for your time!
Alright, with your post in mind, I'd run Old Zog and a Mek w/ SAG, 19 grots with the SAG, two groups of 12 lootas, 2 or 3 groups of 30 boyz, storm boyz w/ zagstruk, another group of 19 or 29 grots depending on points to run out front and provide cover to your boyz.
Tank bustas have a bad rep, and putting them in a wagon doesn't really keep them with the rest of your boyz, but they could run around and get shot at ?
Dunno how well it'll do, but you'd have a good time, and really that should be the ponit
I think the coolest, most fun looking army the orks have is the dreadwall, 9 killa kans, 2 deff dreads, 2 big meks and a bunch of boyz. That would look really cool all painted up, and who wouldnt love playing a walker themed army?
Hey, use tankbustas if you must. You're not going to break my heart. ^_^
The best cross reference in the Ork army between 'fun' and 'useful' is definitely Killa Kans. They're fairly cheap, they hit really hard, they shoot fairly well, they're fairly resilient (especially when kept within range of a KFF), and their new models are beautiful.
The SAG is a lot of fun, but expect them to frequently cause hilarious disasters. I find trukks to be a lot of fun, but that's me. Either they help you leap down your opponent's throat, or they hilariously spin around and explode.
Also, grots are a lot of fun because it means practically nothing if they die, and winning a close combat with them will drive your opponent's bonkers (the best was when I used them to shoot at and then charge a unit of dire avengers, ultimately destroying them all).
I second that. Grots are an absolute must for a funny army, their new models are hilarious!
I certainly agree with grots. I was thinking of fielding some Gunz as well.
The SAG is weighing in heavily against a second warphead. I am not sure which would be funnier to play. That comment about hilarious disasters is exactly the feel that I am looking for.
I wish I could field 2 warpheads AND the SAG....
Mobs of grots to shield my mobs of boyz, warpheads doing their thing.
Trucks, eh? I was sort of leaning toward 'Don't press dat' on the wagons, although I will not have much to transport outside of my tankbustas. I know that unit is frowned upon but I cannot get the bomb squigs outta my head. Just the image of this enraged and looney squig with a mouth full of high explosives makes me laugh. Perhaps I will keep the bustas minimized. The wagon was more to get them to where they need to be quickly but I guess playing foot-sloggin' horde I am better off with em in the back and marching right along.
add the warphead to the bustas and hope for a deep strike. awesomeness.
also take a SAG far more hilarious than a warphead.
Alright, so I did some homework before weighing in, and I came up with this list for 1500:
8 Tankbustas, 3 Squigs, 2 Tankhammers
7 Nobz, 2 PK, 4 BC, 1 WAAAGH Banner, Painboy, Trukk w/Reinforced Ram
12 Boyz, Nob w/PK BP, Trukk with Red Paint, Reinforced Ram
12 Boyz, Nob w/PK BP, Trukk with Red Paint, Reinforced Ram
29 Grotz, 2 Runtherd
3 Deffkoptas w/TL Rokkit, 1 Big Bomm
2 Warbuggies w/Skorcha
Looted Wagon, 2 Rokkits, Grabbin Klaw, Grot Riggers
Looted Wagon, Boomgun, 'ard Case
Its competitive, has enough units to make sure your not out maneuvered, and if you get turn one, you should be able to do some damage. Place Zogwort with the Nobz, and SAG with the Grots- use them as the meat shields they were made for! You can drop the grabbin Klaw, but I got lucky in a game where I grabbed the basilisk from behind, and so it couldn't turn to fire at me before the tankbustas did their job! Shoot the closest vehicle? My pleasure! Good luck man.
EDIT- Looted Wagon w/rokkits is the Tankbustas Home.
I'd definitely split the grots into two units, so you can claim multiple objectives with them. In any game 1500 points or larger, I never use less than four troop choices, and five is better.
I'd only give the looted wagon transport a single gun, since you have to stand still in order to fire more than one. Instead, I'd move the gun over to the looted wagon with the boomgun, so it can still do something if the main gun is destroyed.
The nobz really need cybork and a bosspole. Some combi-skorchas on the nobz with powerklaws would also be nice. What they don't need is big choppas. They're not very good at all.
Finally, you can also get rid of the big bomb on the deffkoptas. It rarely does anything worthwhile.
Oh grax, as always I'm forced to agree with you... Although 29 grots shielding a SAG would be fun... I definitely recommend the rokkit change, and drop a BC to get the BP, maybe a kombi skorcha. The only reason the big bomm was there was for... well, being fun/unpredictable, and Orky, like he asked. But grax makes a valid point, its Useless' cousin, so dump it if ya want
Now I have to disagree with you. Yes, BC isn't a power weapon (though why not... the world may never know...) but it does mean 4 WS 5 S7 attacks on the charge, and I don't think you can argue thats a bad thing. They won't stand up to a terminator assault squad, but they sure will wipe vehicles/walkers quickly. Mayhaps with the bigbomm points and a nob less you can afford cyborks, something i feel silly for overlooking in the first place! Enjoy.
EDIT: I'll leave my original statement but I just thought I'd share that maybe an extra attack is worth losing the 2 strength, but I would say it varies on opponent.
