Welcome to Librarium Online!
First off I'm completely utterly new, I just had my first 500pt battle which I lost horribly to an orc army.
I'm about to go up against a space marine army and I was going through my current army setup when I noticed that I could take a shield drone for cheaper than the Hard point version. If I go with the drone i save 5pts and clear up a hard-point, but I offer an additional kill point.
The question I have is: Should I bother taking a SG, if so which is better the drone or the Hard point version? Bare in mind this is for my HQ.
Shield drones to not give away kill points. I would recommend the drone version.
cheaper, yes, but once it dies you lose that save, and u take the chance of whoever has the drone running, cus ur flying frisbee got shot.
There are three kinds of people in this world, those who can count and those who cannot.
Thanks for the reply's and insight,
A: Shield Drone=cheaper, but easily lost unit w/possible Fleeing issue.
B: Shield Generator=slightly more expensive and uses a Hard-point, but is reliable.
one positive a-piece and two negative's...
Things you have to think about with the shield drone that makes it a little better.
First off, you can get two off them without using a hard point. This means, more or less, adding two wounds the model can take.
Two...The shield drones have the same toughness and armor save as the model they accompany. This means that if they wouldn't be subject to instant death, you can take the 3+ save for them.
Three(not recommended)... By freeing up the hard point with the hard-wired drone controller, you could take the iridium armor to get a 2+ save. This along with the drones being upgraded to a 2+ save makes the unit very survivable. It does however cut the second move to a single D6 inches...this can get you into some real trouble if you get left in the open. This first post of the Basic Guide to HQ's covers this.
4: Having two drones means that losing one won't make you take a leadership test.
Five; The third hard point is better occupied by a weapon or useful war-gear item/support system. This is all covered once again in the Basic Guide to HQ's...(you should read it..wink wink nudge nudge)
My platform is RL, you'd be surprised at the quality of the graphics!
I have read the HQ guide, I was just wondering as far as which would be better the SG or the SD's. As far as I know this was not covered heavily in that guide or elsewhere(please correct me if wrong).
It sounds like the SD's might be a little better, granted I have the points...
Always take a Shield Drone, and I'm not sure why anyone wouldn't.
It's five points cheaper, doesn't take up a hard point (in most cases), and is only good news for your units. It's this mindset that I don't understand: if your Shield Drone dies it either:cheaper, yes, but once it dies you lose that save, and u take the chance of whoever has the drone running, cus ur flying frisbee got shot.
1) Failed an armor save, which your Crisis would have failed anyways (So your 15pt Drones takes a wound instead of your 50+pt Crisis)
2) Failed an invulnerable save that your Crisis would have failed anyways (usually caused by S8 or higher weapons, which would have caused Instant Death on your Crisis. So your 15pt Drone completely saved your 50+pt Crisis)
Depending on units size and/or the model equipped with it, the potential Ld test really isn't even worth worrying about.
Yes to everything Illegal Carrot just said.
ninjabackhand: point and click, again, really? even after i give you an military term "shock tactic" you still call it point and click.

Two drones are always better than one, though, for morale purposes.
I've mod'd my list and hopefully it will work alot better than last time.
I decided to go with the 2xSD's(+HWDC) and replacing the SG with a TA.
PS:next week I'll be getting more so i can start doing 1k games, otherwise thats what i own... and again thank you all for your input.
