From a game last night - an immolator (essentially a fast heavy flamer razorback) ploughed into a squad of boys and roasted a good chunk of them. The unit had a power claw, but needing a 6 to hit resulted in the vehicle getting away unharmed.
Next turn it broke the unit with a tank-shock and took a decent bite out of a second mob of boys, winding up shaken for it's troubles. Still mobile it again tank-shocked to bunch up it's new target at which point it's occupants popped out and cleaned out the third (burna boyz) unit while the vehicle screened them.
The whole time it was using the ork mobs themselves as cover from shelling and ramming and dragging them away from the objectives.
So the question - how do you respond/mitigate against fast assault vehicles? (I ask this as a non Ork player looking for advice to pass on)
Lootas, rokkit koptas/buggies, Deffrollas, bikers can also work firing into rear armour.
The copters and buggies i'm less familiar with - don't think i've seen him use them (or much fast attack in general).
On the same subject - unit placement. A number of his problems seemed to come from having 'soft' flanks with his main units advancing fairly centrally. Are there good units for edges? Buggies perhaps?
Buggies are good for giving your units cover, and ducking down flanks to get off side/rear shots on light armour. a squad of 3 with twin linked rokkits can cause some havoc. IMO deffkoptas are better, The ability ot outflank is handy and Scout can get them a first turn shot at rear or side armour and they have an option to throw in a buzzsaw for str 7 attacks on the charge. Run koptas in squads of 2 for maximum utility. Small enough to hide and can still regroup if one dies.
Another suggestion would be using rokkit armed killa kans to anchor the flanks between terrain.
It would be easier to provide more tips and tactics if you had a better rundown of his list and how many points.
Warboss and big nob squad in battlewaggon (lots of CC stuff, painboy, etc)
Big mek with shokk attack gun (blew himself away with his first shot)
5 burna boyz
3 squads of 30 ork boys, nob with power claw and bosspole (and possibly armour)
10 gretchin with runtherd & prod
Deffdread (pure close combat)
3 killa kans (mix of weapons including rokkit launchas)
~10 bikers with nob.
That's from memory but it looks about right. I was expecting to face more vehicles but he knows my fondness for exorcist launchers.
I'd ditch the foot burna boys for a 2nd squad of lootas to go with the sag mek.( who needs a bosspole)
Armour on the boys nob is a waste if he has it.
Probably ditch the BW on the nob squad for a trukk. then use the remaining points (and ditch a few bikers) for a unit of boys in a trukk to accompany them
I can see the logic behind both approaches. I think he leaves them separate to split fire (plus in this instance the poor mek blew rolled double 1 with his first shot)
I'll pass on the suggestions - the paired koptas sound interesting in light of outflanking in his past two games.
If he does take some trukks ditch the SAG on the mek and give him a KFF, half your shots being deflected is very frustrating.
