Super quick: Is there rule about C'Tans that I am missing that makes them immune to Instant Death? I can't find one. So if Nightbringer, all 330 points of him is fighting Skulltaker all 140 points of him and Skulltaker hits for the "Skulls for the Throne" rule (rends on a 4 or better resulting in instant death) and if Nightbringer fails his invulnerable save, Nightbringer is dead on the spot? There's a big hole in there me thinks.
Unfortunately, this is a big loop hole, and yet another are where we are being shunned and left in the dirt. The Nightbringer, and the Deceiver, are only immune to Instant Death by the weapons that are specifically stated in its codex entry. So really, the only weapon in the entire of the 40K universe that cannot inflict Instant Death through their special ruling is a Wraithcannon. Therefore, I hate to say it, but Skulltaker has the right of way here. He will inflict Instant Death on the Nightbringer, from your example.
So stay away from Skulltaker!

Yup, back in 3rd ed. (where our Codex is from) insta-killing something with as high toughness as C'tans have used to be pretty much impossible. However, in 5th ed. everyone and their dog get some kind of insta-kill special rules so C'tan gets easily toasted by special characters.

In friendly games you can talk to your opponent and most will agree to give your C'Tan the eternal warrior special rule, since they are gods to us necron followers.
Good luck with that! I can't get them to waive or scale back the stupid, and I repeat, STUPID, Phase Out rule.
The eternal warrior rule was added after our codex and our C'Tan would have had the rule if we were up to date.
So while the phase out is a part of necrons, eternal warrior is a gap in the rules.
You can at least try and talk to your opponent about it, just refer to a model of him that has the special rule and explain that the C'Tan is a God so if his model would have the rule it is only reasonable that your God would have it aswell.
This comes back to getting a new codex. Wishful thinking. The Necrons are an after thought in my books. GW have had years to fix things and just haven't. Too bad, I really like the look of the models, love painting them too, but I hate playing them mainly because you Phase out in the middle of a good, tight game. People may accept the Phase Out rule and say "it's part of the Necrons", but not me. I hate the rule like many others hate the rule and I'll play my other army until change comes. If someone is lucky to play with a group who will waive some rules for you then good for you; you're lucky. In my group, the rules are the rules and we live with them.
At least the C'tan explodes after instant-deathing in melee...
I am verbose. Sorry.

ITT people forget that when the C'tan had their rules written there was only about 3 models in the game that could actually cause instant death on them and the C'tan get a special rule against one of them (wraithcannon).
