So I have decided to come over to the world of 40k becuase Fantasy has been treating me well and I would like a little break while all the bugs get worked out of the new rulebook. So I wanted to start a Tyranids or an Ork army ( I must like horde armies) and after playing a couple games with my buddy ( at 1000 pts) it seems I have hit an impenetrable wall called SHIELD DRONES. My issue is that there is like 2-3 on his HQ, and 2 on his Broadside team and even if I manage to penetrate the armor there is always that invulnerable save. I'm not going to lie, its frustrating, seems I can wipe out everything else fairly easily but they are always left.
Also as a side note I am a bit confused about the rule for regrouping, the rulebook says that a unit cannot regroup if " the unit is below half strength" does that mean that a unit cannot regroup if they are below half the number of models that they started the game with?
Thank you in advance for your clarification, and I look forward to devouring many worlds
ermm... wow this is a bit of a hard one to awnser... i mean i dont think theres any real tactic to beating sheild drones... theyre just extra wounds you have to chew through. Basically its all about making them take saves, eventually they'll fail a couple. Either swamp them in assault with hormaguants or the like, or use 2 TL devourers with brainleech worms if its that much of an issue.
Also i just want to check, you say your a fantasty player so i think its worthwhile asking this... you realise you cant take an armour save AND an invulnerable save right? An invulnerable save is taken when a weapon has a lower or equal to AP than your save. If you fail an armour save, thats it, the drone dies, it cant take an invulnerable too.
Anyway just figured that was worth a check, judging from the wording of your post.
Enjoy your time on LO
Edit: yes thats exactly how the re-grouping rule works. If you have 20 guants and 11 die through casualtys, if the unit falls back they would be unable to re-group.

Yes, thank you I was aware of the fact that if it penetrates armor then they can only take their invulnerable save. Looks like I'll just have to deal, shouldnt be too hard with a billion brainleech shots I suppose . Also is there a limit to how many drones one unit can have? and he can shoose to allocate the wounds anyway he chooses right? He doesn't have to take the shield drone off, correct?
God now thats a question for a tau player methinks.
*grabs megaphone* NUMBER6!!!!
yeah failing that someone can probably put me right here, i belive the rule is 2 per unit, with shas'o (the commanders) having an option for more.... i think anyway.
Allocation is a slightly different matter. Lets say he has a unit of 3 suits, with 2 drones, and you force 7 saves. Because wounds must be allocated equally, every model would take 1 wound, with two models taking an aditional wound. Wiether the tau have a rule that contradicts this i dont know, but thats now it works generally.

tarpit them in CC- that way they aren't shooting, and they should worth more then those gaunts, also ymragl stealers or lictors/deathleaper can do the job by killing them[rending force them to either suffer wound or do the save on the shield-that not always can be picked at the CC(they are treated as diff squads in cc, right?)]
The number of drones that any Tau unit can take depends on the unit. It is possible for a full unit of Crisis Suits (3 models strong) to have 6 drones, 2 per suit, though it's extremely rare to see that as most of us Tau players prefer buying guns.
More commonly, just one of the models in a Tau unit -- e.g., a Tau Commander (Shas'el/Shas'o) or a team leader in a group of Crisis suits or Broadsides -- will tote along a pair of drones. For almost all purposes, drones are treated exactly as if they were members of the unit.
And that means that wound allocation rules are in full effect. Any wounds allocated to drones must be taken by the drones. Any wounds allocated to the suits must be taken by the suits. Only in previous editions of the game could you roll all your saving throws at once and then choose which models to remove. Drones -- being unique models in comparison to the other models in the unit -- have to roll their saves separately from the suits.
In fact, in the common scenario I outlined above, a typical Broadside team of 2 suits and 2 drones has 3 distinct model groupings: 1 normal Broadside + 1 team leader Broadside + 2 shield drones. If such a unit were to suffer 4 wounds, each model would take 1 wound and the Tau player would have to roll saves 3 different times: 2 dice for the drones, then 1 die for the normal suit, then 1 die for the team leader suit.
ninjabackhand: point and click, again, really? even after i give you an military term "shock tactic" you still call it point and click.
