Consider the following....
*XV15/XV22/XV25/XV8 are jump infantry(jet pack).
*models with "jet packs" are considered relentless(pg52 of the mini rule book).
*relentless allows the firing of rapidfire and heavy weapons after moving(pg76 of the mini rule book)
*both the XV8 and XV88 have a special rule that disallows the firing of heavy weapons after moving, XV15, XV22, XV25 do NOT have this special rule(pg27 of tau codex).
*ML drones are the same unit type as it's owner(pg31 of tau codex).
Given the above info, consider this unit loadout:
3x XV25:3x DC, 6x MLD=270pts
*6 possible ML hits at 42" w/JSJ
*HIGH annoyance factor
*double the pts for the equivalent PF squad
*takes an Elite slot
I have no Idea the chain of logic i used to come up with this but as far as I can see it's fairly sound.
Also given the above info;
Can a ML drone accompanying a XV8 or XV88 have the same advantages(JSJ ML) regardless of their watered down relentless rule?
PS: Please let me know if any of the above rules have been updated or changed, preferably with a link so I can see them and any others, thanks.
The problem here is that the Codex trumps the BRB - and the codex has special variant rules for Tau jetpacks. Go look them up.
I did, as stated above. On page 27 of the tau codex, it states quite clearly that the XV8 and XV88 have the altered version to which you are probably refering to, the XV15-XV25 do NOT have the altered version to which you are refering to.
Ive always wanted a stealth marker squad. I always found it odd that pathfinders being the scouts of the tau wernt issued SFG, maybe in the next codex *crosses fingers*
Either way my friend, the MLD are not heavy weapons, they are in fact jump jet infantry themselves. Drone controllers allow you to take drones as part of the squad and are selected -as- wargear, but are in fact units themselves. The drones themselves are jump jet infantry and therefore have relentless.
Since it is the drone firing the heavy weapon, and it's the drone with relentless, it can fire it's markerlight regardless of the unit it's attached to, and regardless as to whether it has moved.
So IMO XV-8 teams, XV-25 teams, and even VX-88 teams can move and still fire their markerlight -drones- because the drones themselves have relentless. Hence the entire arguement is moot.
I briefly used a stealth marker team in the early days of 5th edition before even the IG codex was released, and I was moderately happy with it.
3 XV25, team leader with markerlight, 2 marker drones, 165 pts
I mean, it was "OK", and definitely fun, but by the time the IG codex was released I was (once again) convinced that we simply cannot give up any Elite slots to anything not Crisis Suits. You're giving up too many points and too much firepower by taking Stealth Suits in any configuration. And 270 pts for an average of 3 marker hits is WAY too expensive. That is just about equivalent to buying two 4-man pathfinder units with their Devilfish! That is clearly a more efficient and effective buy, especially because it doesn't compete for Elite slots.
The Stealth marker team had its brief period of moderate utility -- about 6 months if we're generous -- but not taking Stealths has always been smarter, even in 4th edition. And with 5th edition and the new codexes out and about, this is doubly true.
ninjabackhand: point and click, again, really? even after i give you an military term "shock tactic" you still call it point and click.
RIP Warhammer 40,000: 21 Sep 1998 - 24 May 2014
I ran it once myself, exactly as 6 described. It was fun and mobile, but it felt like it should have been 2 deathrain+ suits instead. T_T
I agree, but with serran's clarafication, taking ML drones seems a tad bit more appealing since the crisis suits can take em (saving the E slot) and still get hits off after moving(but still the cost is bleh).
I was trying for something that could potentially save the XV25's but I guess we'll have to wait till the codex update...
Well I ran a 1000 pt game using the XV25 squad listed above, I won the game but lost the unit at turn 3, I agree with you guys it had it's day in the sun...
