All right Tau Gurus, I have a question that I could use your help with.
For an upcoming campaign with friends of mine, we rolled up random specials each army has in addition to their current army status. Some people got extra points to spend, some got additional deployment options, etc.
The special ability I received was the ability to give one of my commanders any wargear item from ANY codex for no points cost.
To start, I have thought about the 2+ invul. shadow shield from the dark eldar codex, the dakkacannon from Wazdakka's bike (to replace the missile pod). I have also thought about a terminator missle launcher to add extra fire power rather than replace something.
While it was not explicitly stated, I am not willing to use vehicle exclusive wargear. It goes against the spirit and I believe it would be uncalled for.
Here is the question I lay out before you. What wargear item should I take to enhance the fireknife 'el?
I assume everyone in your group is going to take a Deathstrike Missile.
If you're dead set against vehicle wargear then go with a Shokk Attack Gun or a Thunderfire Cannon. I can't think of any infantry-wielding gun that tops those two. Maybe a conversion beamer.

How about the Staff of light? A large high strength low AP blast plate per turn at 24" could be nice. It might go well with the plasm rifle's range as well.
Isn't the Staff of Light a Necron weapon with power weapon ability and a MEq killer statline, rather than what you described? Unless of course there's another SoL which I haven't heard of? (Quite possible, I suppose; there's that many new codices coming out these days...!)
Thunderfire cannon would be nice, or else the Tempest Launcher from the Dark Reaper Exarch. "Guess range" weapon (ie Barrage), but has nice range, more than a single shot, anti-MEq AP and it uses the small blast marker. It can be devastating.
"Tau Commandment #226: Participants who use Velocity Trackers in the Tau Clay Pigeon Tournament will be disqualified"
Sorry, I had confused the stats of the particle whip with the staff of life. My mistake. I too believe that the thunderfire cannon may be a great asset. I am still having trouble giving up the dakka kannon though. 4 S8 shots is almost too good to pass up.
I guess the main thing that matters is what his role will be: vehicle hunter or infantry destroyer. I guess we'll see.
Either way, a shield generator will be a good substitute for the weapon, neh?
i got a few:
holy orb of antioch from black templars (single use large blast grenade that always wounds on 2+ and AP3, and auto-glance vehicles)
sternguard bolter from space marines (with special ammunition)
njal stormcallers' runic weapon from space wolves (with the turn by turn special effects, and 3+ to nullify psychic powers. not to mention, force weapon)
saga of the bear from space wolves (no instant death)
psycannon from daemonhunters (mostly not as good as dakka cannon, but it does ignore invul saves)
otherwise, of the things already mentioned, i agree with the dark eldar 2+ invul save, the dakka cannon and the cyclone. the cyclone is especially good in that it gives you those shots in addition to your normal shots (a jsj crisis suit shooting 3 weapons is beastly)
i advise against the thunderfire cannon. the thunderfire cannon is wargear, but one that is taken as an additional model, with unit type artillery. having a thunderfire cannon with your crisis suit would slow him and his entire unit down both in the movement phase and in the assault phase (no jsj)
Ask them for the ability to use a third weapon. Get yourself a cyclic ion blaster. That, combined with your plasma rifle and missile pod, all at BS 5, should kill some enemies dead.
i love that bonus you got. there are just so many possibilities. anyways i got a couple more. unless you're dead set on getting a weapon, you should think about wargear that increases survivability.
the dark eldar 2+ invul save, as already said
saga of the bear, giving you eternal warrior is also great (a T4 model, at the end of the day, is still very easy to insta-kill)
my personal favourite, the red grail from the corbulo entry in blood angels (2+ instead of 4+ FNP for himself, as well as normal FNP for units within 6"). just incredible.
you should take....
oh, wait damnit!
nah take shokk attack gun just keep your commander cheap because you don't wan't to go losing him to an unlucky roll
