I'm thinking about creating an army which is half shooting and half combat, then which troops should I be looking at?
Erm... litterally anything. Except rippers, because you have to work to put them into a list... but anything will do.

What would be the best troop choice for shooting?
There are several good choices. 2 specifc choices that I have found exceedingly effective are:
1) Devourer Gaunts in a large unit 20+ models. The volume of fire this unit achieves can decimate enemy troop units, usually in 1 volley, without the need of a concentration of force from multiple units.
2) Warriors in medium 5+ model units. Using deathspitters and 1 barbed strangler, they are effective anti-troops units. I like these more as support role and a synapse bridge, while still able to assist in fire support. I prefer the deathspitter, when fighting lightly armoured (5+ or worse) infantry. With less models, I want the wounds to count. However, if fighting better armored units, the devourers, can free up some points.
Also of note, your troops selection shooting, will/should be mostly aimed at other troops units. The elite sections fo the Tryanid army are where you will find your vehicle shooting capabilities.
The Devourer Gaunts in a spore And a Tervigon with catalyst and cluster spines are good for troop concentrations. Otherwise for CC go for a couple of good sized hormagaunt broods with or wo AG. Maybe some death spitter warriors with a Tyranid prime in a spore if I am looking for fire supremacy and a bit mobility at strong points.
