Welcome to Librarium Online!
I think I am finally taking the plunge and will be buying my first 500 points to begin the 2000 point army. Both of the two squads I am debating will make it into the final army, but which will serve me better at the 500 point level?
(199) Guardian Jet Bike x 6
- Warlock, Embolden, 2x Shuriken Cannons
(192) Dire Avengers x 6
- Wave Serpent, EML, SS
Whichever squad is chosen will be paired with a Storm Guardian squad led by a Warlock and Farseer with Doom, riding in a Waveserpent with EML. What I like about the Bike squad is it provides me with some transport killing capability at range but also some very mobile horde killing, at a very durable (for Eldar) T4 and 3+. I haven't finalized everything yet and the points might not work, forcing me to drop the Warlock from the squad. Of course, the extra EML and hull armor will allow me to kill some mechs and transports at range a bit more reliably with an extra TL Str 8 shot, but will six DA really get much done?
Just thinking myself, I would imagine that the Serpent is going to provide more use than the Avengers themselves, and could be added at the next bump to 750 with some Dragons. But I'd like your opinions before I start purchasing.
6 DA could be dropped off on an objective, while the WS goes wandering about - but it mainly depends on what you face. Personally I think I'd go with the jetbikes at low point games for a 24" last turn objective grab.
Both would work equally well for the tasks they are ment to perform. Really get them both... Theres your 2 troop choices needed.
When you get to the Fire dragons.... put them in a transport !!.. be it either a wave serpent or a falcon. Fire Dragons on foot without a transport is like a Dragon without wings.. Neutered..

If you really have to choose at this stage go for the DAs and WS - you know as you expand the army you will defo want this squad whereas the bikes are optional in my opinion.
Check out my Blog for my Biel-Tan Apocalypse progress
I use both. The real question should be weather you want shell out the cash for the jet bikes. If so then go for it as they'll be better in my opinion. If not, then the Dire Avengers are still a good choice at low point games.
Army's used: Space Wolves, Tomb Kings, High Elves, Tyranids, Tau and Eldar.
dire avengers hands down in this case, i use a 3 man jb squad for last min. obj. grabs but das are more reliable.
Dire Avengers, hands down no questions asked.
Jetbikes really arn't that good. Plus you gotta waste some guardian model torsos and heads to make them look at all nice. =)
Eldar -APOC- 6500 Points
Chaos Daemons -Fate Crusher- 3500 Points
Grey knights - 1000 Points
Serpent can have two Shuriken Cannons too, one of which would be twin-linked... and then it's cheaper. Unless for fluff/aestethic reasons (or in case you simply like this kind of stuff, I have deviations too - I like lancer vypers) there is no benefit in choosing bikes.
What's the rest of your list look like? Perhaps you have a mob of Guardians Defenders that could be dropped (so both of the above options could be taken), or you could be low on anti-armor and need the Wave Serpent's guns...
Also, fun fact: the 'plasma' shot from the EML (frag equivalent) counts as a defensive weapon at S4. Just saying...
Terminator armor going critical would be like Three Mile Island only very, VERY angry, and carrying a hammer.
LO rules in a nutshell: Don't post unit costs, be polite, rep posts containing of win.
If you get the jetbikes, expect to have to make them work for their effectiveness. The warlock is of dubious worth too, in this case. Few more points and you get 9 bikes with 3 cannons.
If your going WS mech then the DA are an obvious choice, but personally its the most boring army you can play (just my 2c, alot of people disagree).
DA are easier to use, and with a WS also tend to be more survivable and forgiving.
Keep in mind you don't ever really want to be in CC with your jetbikes.
