Welcome to Librarium Online!
As the title implies, I am thinking of starting a new tau army. I currently play nids and have a small bit of wolves, but now im interested in some serious shooting, and from what I hear and have seen tau looks like it can fit that role well.
Thing I would like to ask is: Worth while getting the battle box? what units should I look at getting? are transports a must with tau?
and one last question if you don't mind, what are the competitive load outs for some of the more important units?
Thanks in advance!
First off, I suggest reading the stickied Tau tactica by SirPromethius.
If you want to play competitively the most common 2000-point build consists of around 10 crisis battlesuits, 2 kroot squads, 1-2 min size FW squads riding in devilfish (usually hijacked from pathfinders), 1-2 pathfinder squads, sometimes 1-2 squadrons of 2 piranhas, 1 broadside squad and 2 hammerheads. Keep in mind this is not necessarily the best build and you will want to form your own variant, but it's the most common and it definitely works.
For Crisis suits, the three most common configurations are the Deathrain (TL Missile + Targeting Array or Flamer), the Fireknife (Plasma, Missile and Multi-Tracker), and the Torch (TL Flamer + Missile Pod). They perform different roles and they all possess different strengths and weaknesses, but the one thing they all have in common is they have a Missile Pod. In 5th ed it's vital to pop open the transports to kill the squishy infantry inside so the Missile Pod is required for every single battlesuit in your army.
As far as buying the army goes, it depends on what kind of list you intend to build. The basic competitive Tau build is pretty much cemented but there are variations. For example, some people use no Hammerheads and fill up their Heavy Support slots with Broadsides (this is what I've been doing lately).

* Get a battle box? Yes get the battle box at least 1+ as it will give you quite a few good troops for a relatively cheap price compared to buying everything separately. I personally have 2 and am getting ready to buy another.
*What should you get? Crisis Suites x4-10+, broadsides x1-3+, hammerhead x1-2, kroot x20-40, kroot hounds x5-10, Fire warriors x12-24, Piranha x2-4+, Devilfish x1-2+. That should be a give you access to a fare(small points) list to a competitive(1.5k+) army list.
*Are transports required? Thats a mixed bag depending on whom you talk to on here. As "MorbidlyObeseMonkey" stated read the stickies.
*What are good core unit Load out's? What "MorbidlyObeseMonkey" said; "Deathrain (TL Missile + Targeting Array or Flamer), the Fireknife (Plasma, Missile and Multi-Tracker), and the Torch (TL Flamer + Missile Pod)," also Disruption pods( DP ) on ALL vehicles and Fusion Blaster( FB ) for all Piranha.

Seconded on reading the pinned 5e tactica at the top of the forum.
I also suggest checking out the more detailed tactica I wrote, linked below in my sig.

ninjabackhand: point and click, again, really? even after i give you an military term "shock tactic" you still call it point and click.

Recently it dropped off the website and has been replaced at cheaper price... but I know it used to be possible to buy the Skyray Gunship, and build a hammerhead out of the included parts. Saves you $5 per tank if it is still so. Plus the Skyray missile rack if you ever want to swap turrets and try the missile boat out.
Okay thanks for all the help, ill post a list when I get around to it
Sky Ray is still on the main UK GW site at standard price. The advice is good though: buy this model as you get all the parts (except two Gun Drones IIRC) for the three main Tau vehicles.
